Apple Unveils Apple Intelligence 29
As rumored, Apple today unveiled Apple Intelligence, its long-awaited push into generative artificial intelligence (AI), promising highly personalized experiences built with safety and privacy at its core. The feature, referred to as "A.I.", will be integrated into Apple's various operating systems, including iOS, macOS, and the latest, VisionOS. CEO Tim Cook said that Apple Intelligence goes beyond artificial intelligence, calling it "personal intelligence" and "the next big step for Apple."
Apple Intelligence is built on large language and intelligence models, with much of the processing done locally on the latest Apple silicon. Private Cloud Compute is being added to handle more intensive tasks while maintaining user privacy. The update also includes significant changes to Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, which will now support typed queries and deeper integration into various apps, including third-party applications. This integration will enable users to perform complex tasks without switching between multiple apps.

That said, these consumer systems still have limitations. As such, some of the heavy lifting needs to be done off device in the cloud. As such, Apple is adding Private Cloud Compute
Goddamn it. NO. Nobody wants that shit. Because it's private all the way up till you say, it's no longer private. Then it's not private. See if it's all on my device, I get to say when it becomes no longer private. But when it's on your machine, YOU get to say when it's no longer private. See how that works?
The offering will also open up multi-tasking in a profound way, allowing a kind of cross-app compatibility. That means, for instance, that users won’t have to keep switching between Calendar, Mail and Maps in order to schedule meetings, for example.
Oh look! What's old is new again. Are we doing KParts, COM+, OLE, CORBA, ...... Fucking hell, cycle never ends. Before you know it, we'll be off cloud computing again and doing desktop applications once more, only to fucking return to whatever Web 12.0 is or whatever.
Just FYI WWDC day 1 this year was a whole lot of snooze that shows that Apple can only sell shiny, but innovative days are long since in the rearview. Also, still waiting on the FaceTime open protocol [youtube.com].

I think you're working under the assumption that you even own your own physical hardware. With apple shit, that's not the case. It's more like a perpetual lease agreement.

Sure you say, RAM , storage and more expansion cards but could you really replace the CPU or other chips ? Older machines had the CPU on a card along with everything else. Huh? The same fuckup Microsoft just got done doing WAS all on-device processing. The "fuckup" part was taking constant screenshots and shoving them into an unencrypted (and no, bitlocker disk encryption doesn't fucking count) database on the device so anyone with access to it could hoover the info up.

Came here to ask this. If there is a master switch to turn off all AI parsing that is not on the device.
Maybe I'm weird... but I don't use Siri, Alexa, or whatever. A map, I just select from contacts where I need to go. I just don't need something like that. Maybe it does help workflows, but I've just not invested the time, and not felt like yapping to a device if in the office.

The article does not say. It just gives vapid feel-good promises about privacy being built in at the core.
My plans to buy a mac mini are officially on hold until I know for sure that I can turn this off. Or at least turn off anything that sends any of my data to Apple (including apple's "private cloud").

Even prior to the subject of TFA, how did you "know for sure" that you could turn off all data that might be sent to Apple? Seriously, you trust that any of these companies isn't taking at least the occasional nibble of your private data?

Fair enough. I use a dumbphone and my main PC is Linux. Though I still have a windows laptop around for a few things that I haven't gotten working reliably on Linux. I don't like it though. I don't like the way it advertised at me and the way I had to wade through a dark-pattern-rich stormy sea of settings to try and turn stuff off, only to see it automatically turned back on for me when updates came later. And I especially didn't like the "windows recall" announcement.

Apparently Windows will take a screenshot of your next Windows every 5 seconds, and feed it into an AI. I assume it will only share it with "partners", which includes anyone who throws money at them, including governments. Or maybe it just notifies governments of sketchy stuff you may have.

I don't want off-device AI or any of that. But, I would wait on buying a new iPhone or Mac until I know it will support whatever they are doing on device, if I can have access to it.
