Linux at AppleExpo

Jean Paul Smets wrote in to send us a link to Pictures of Linux at AppleExpo. He also wrote up a few highlights which I've attached to the other half of this story...
The following is from an announcement by Jean Paul Smets

AFUL met more than 1000 people in 5 days, including journalists from Japan. Thierry STOEHR, a member of AFUL, met and engineer from EDF (Electricite de France), one of the biggest electricity company in the world, who said that his company is already using Linux for corporate projects.

All members of AFUL were quite impressed by the fact that so many Mac users were very curious to try Linux although they had no Unix skills or Computer Science background. Most of them were quite impressed by the power of Linux on the G3, its multitasking stability, its server functionalities, its compatibility with MacOS file sharing etc. They liked especially

  • Gimp, a powerful image manipulation program with hundreds of plug-ins
  • webots, a 3D robot simulator
  • Scilab, a math application with 3D display
  • the fact that Linux comes with so many programming languages

However, many people said that Linux should be improved on the G3. Many people are asking for

  • a no brainer installation of Linux on the G3 : the best thing would probably be a G3 with Linux pre-installed
  • manuals in French
  • a distribution that would come with all the best Linux applications
  • Linux to be a part of MacOS X
Regards,

JPS.
