Apple Is Bringing Visual Intelligence To the iPhone 15 Pro (theverge.com) 16
Apple's Google Lens-like took called Visual Intelligence is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro, according to John Gruber of Daring Fireball. It's unclear which update will offer the feature but Gruber speculates it could arrive with iOS 18.4 in April. From a report: Visual Intelligence was originally introduced with the initial iPhone 16 lineup in September, and Apple showed it off as a feature that you launched from the Camera Control button. But yesterday, Apple announced that Visual Intelligence would be available on the iPhone 16E, which does not have the Camera Control button, through its Action Button.
That suggested that the feature could technically work with the iPhone 15 Pro, which also has an Action Button, and now Apple is confirming that Visual Intelligence will indeed come to that phone and be available via the Action Button. You'll also be able to launch Visual Intelligence from the Control Center on the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple told Gruber.

iPhone can already do all this stuff but ai = cool (Score:2)
the things this can do are:
* Get information about a place
* Get information about animals and plants
* Interact with text (like Read a short summary of the text, Translate it, read it aloud)
* Create a calendar event from details on a poster or flyer
* Ask ChatGPT for information about something the camera sees
* Search Google for similar items
I think there are apps that can already do all of these things without ai so it seems fairly useless to me, but I can really, definitly see people glorying in this featur

There are. But they don't transmit all your search data and response valuation to Apple.
Why do you think Google came up with Lens to begin with?
Apple doesn't either (Score:2)

The search photo and response may run through Apple (not if offline) but Apple doesn't "see" any of it, please read up on the details [apple.com] of how Apple keeps server AI private even from Apple.

Anything touching processing is now AI. Basic OCR is now AI. Calculators are AI. It's AI from top to bottom. Because AI = good. All other tech = bad, old, crusty, nasty, useless. Embrace the warmth of holy god AI, our new savior.

I only upgrade every two years or so at this point (and then only for camera improvements really).
So it's lucky for me that my last upgrade fell on the 15 Pro! I was a little sad I wouldn't get to try the Visual Intelligence stuff but now I'll be able to, very kind of Apple not to make me upgrade to get it.
Heck who knows maybe I could even wait until after this year if there's enough back ported stuff (and they don't put anything amazing in this years camera update).

I'm guessing that, barring physical catastrophe, my iPhone 13 will be due for replacement around 2028. Actually, the only reason I'm not using my iPhone 11 is that my mother broke hers, and she gets my retired electronics. She's on a fixed income so I pretended to want to upgrade.
These new features are impressive but my life is not worse for not having them. All my real needs have long since been met, and I can't even muster up a decent "want" anymore.
I'm content.
