Apple TV Finally Comes To Android Phones, Tablets (9to5google.com) 10
Apple has released an official Apple TV app for Android phones and tablets that's now available in the Google Play Store. You can download it here. 9to5Google reports: The newest Apple app on Android has a bottom bar with Apple TV+, MLS (Major League Soccer), Downloads for offline viewing, and Search. [...] The video player takes after Apple TV on other platforms, with a portrait mode available. There are convenient shortcuts to activate picture-in-picture, which works inside the app (while browsing) and system-wide, and mute to bring up the system volume bar. Playback is smooth and more stable than other streaming services.
At launch, the Apple TV app lacks Casting support and there do not appear to be new episode notifications. If you're already signed into Apple Music, you have to log in again to Apple TV. Another notable aspect is support for Google Play Billing instead of requiring out-of-app sign-up on another device. This applies to both the Google TV app (and Apple Music) today.

Lots of reasons. But fundamentally, when you don't have a bigger screen available at the time and place when and where you want to watch TV.
For example.....when you are in your bedroom, or train car, or bus, or airplane, which is not equipped with a TV.
I realize that you will say you don't want to watch TV in any of those places, but plenty of other people do.
As for Apple haters, just an FYI, there are some very good shows available on AppleTV+.

FFS, don't do this on a public toilet. I was stuck because some douche kid was playing on his phone for almost 20 minutes while I and everyone in the line behind me were crossing our legs, despite everyone yelling at him to get out.

I really find this remarkable, myself. Every night my wife and I do some restorative stretching that she streams from her iPhone to the Sony on the wall (Android TV). And almost every night after 8 minutes, it just pauses until she tells it to play again on her phone. And half the time after we're done and we've moved on to a different app on the TV, her god damn phone will reconnect and start playing the video again completely unprompted sitting on the charger.
Cast it from my 3 year old Android phone?
Expectations (Score:4, Insightful)
Did anyone really expect anything but a half-assed implementation? That's what Apple does with software on non-Apple platforms, and basically always has. Their Apple Music app on Android was so terrible my wife and I switched to a Spotify family account. Their Windows apps were just as bad.
I'll bet the DRM works fantastic though. Gotta make sure that shit is solid.
Why would any Android user want this? (Score:3)
Apple TV is yet another over-priced, low-inventory streaming service.
Syndication is starting to show up on streaming services. Older shows are being licensed to multiple other streamers. If you want to watch anything that's only on Apple TV, just wait a while, it'll show up on your own favorite streaming app.
