Apple Delays Cut-price Vision Headset Until 2027, Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Says 24

Apple has scrapped plans for a budget mixed-reality headset initially slated for 2025, pushing the launch to 2027, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The company will instead focus on releasing an upgraded Vision Pro next year featuring its M5 chip and enhanced AI capabilities, he said. The canceled lower-cost model would have stripped features like EyeSight and used cheaper components to target mainstream consumers.

  • Are they stupid? The AVP weighs the equivalent of one ton sitting on your nose area. so that's a hell fuck no, to a fat bitch sitting on my face. Unless they figure out how to put the CPU and fan stuff with the battery instead of on your face .. hell fuck no.

The new iFaceRest AVP accessory is coming to an Apple Store near you.

It'll be just like those fancy face rests you find on massage tables. Except it’ll be much bigger. To accommodate the iPriceTag.

It's just a bad idea in general. A screen in your glasses has some utility, but beyond that it's gimmicks and potential future applications that are many years away from being usable. And even the screen will suck as soon as eye surgery gets really good and affordable.

    • I hope with the next iteration they will put the battery in the headstrap or release a headstrap with a battery built in. The cable to the battery is just f-ing annoying. Also they can scrap the front display as it's just useless and only adds to the weight, which they should lower by using lighter materials. But personally if it weighs just as much as my Pico 4, I don't really care.
  • If they put out a model that kept a lot of the high tech stuff I'd USE....and dropped that stupid external "eyesight" set up...I figure that would have cut the cost down to where I'd jump on board.....
    • Exactly, they made it weigh a ton for no justifiable reason. The outer display is stupid.

      • Not quite. It'll weigh the same regardless because the fucking braindead Eyesight system is dumber only than the idea of teetering yourself to a hip mounted battery. You can guarantee that if the Eyesight system is remove the battery will also be placed back on the headset and the headset will still weigh just as much.

        • Well , that would be IK, as the cable to the battery is a big annoyance. They could always have an extra headstrap with the battery in the back like the Pico 4 has.
          • I quickly forget the tether is even there. The biggest hindrance to using it for long periods is the weight of it.

Some people like VR games, but the main application is porn. As soon as someone invents a groin attachment it's going to explode, pun intended.

AR isn't something anyone really wants, outside of a few niche areas that are still years away from being practical.

      • Take a look at aliexpress, those groin devices are already available.
      • AR isn't something anyone really wants,

The AR would be a "neat" add on for me, but what I'd really like this for...is the high quality movie viewing on an airplane while tuning out the entire world for the trip (except for the alcohol service of course)....

I'd also like this to give me the ability for a VERY large screen experience when on the road and computing....if they could give me multiple computer screens to work on, that would really tip the scales for me.

It's only a matter of time and money for AR to get good enough to take over the world. However, much like speech to text and self-driving cars, it's going to take a long, long while and a lotta lotta money. However, once the inflection point hits, AR will absolutely take off. Want to live in Harry Potter world? Want facial recognition on every person you see? It's coming.

  • It's too expensive to have much of an effect. The eye feature adds weight and expense, that could have otherwise went into making better LCDs and lenses. Put it next to the Mac Pro's that didn't make any market sense either.
    • not really.
weight: those screens don't weigh that much. the big weight problem is the cooling! probably next are the lens. then the electronics. Even so, it FEELS heavier because it's not properly balanced; you can tell it pulling down on your head while a counter weight in the back would add more, it wouldn't bother you as much over time as the front heavy design does. At their cost... I would have put the electronics in the back with some weight to up the cost a bit. but then I would have had HDMI con

Doesn't matter. Apple doesn't know how to design real products and anything that increases their costs by 5 cents will end up costing the customer an extra 500 dollars.

  • This thing is just an expensive knockoff of the Meta Quest. Meta is having trouble selling those for $2000 less. And the Quest comes with gaming controllers.Tom Cook needs to pull his head out of his ass and go spend some time in the real world.
