Apple Set To Be First Big Tech Group To Face Charges Under EU Digital Law (arstechnica.com) 20
An anonymous reader shares a report: Brussels is set to charge Apple over allegedly stifling competition on its mobile app store, the first time EU regulators have used new digital rules to target a Big Tech group. The European Commission has determined that the iPhone maker is not complying with obligations to allow app developers to "steer" users to offers outside its App Store without imposing fees on them, according to three people with close knowledge of its investigation.
The charges would be the first brought against a tech company under the Digital Markets Act, landmark legislation designed to force powerful "online gatekeepers" to open up their businesses to competition in the EU. The commission, the EU's executive arm, said in March it was investigating Apple, as well as Alphabet and Meta, under powers granted by the DMA. An announcement over the charges against Apple was expected in the coming weeks, said two people with knowledge of the case.

You are of course correct. But that still doesn't explain the way they're locked down. The OS is "free" with the device, including updates. Even back in the day with 68k Macintoshes there was nobody coming around to see how many times you used the same install media. They were just happy to sell you one media set and get you in the building to look at their new overpriced machines.

I don't understand why they aren't making just one OS where you can choose between interfaces, and install whatever you want. The majority of users would still go to their app store.

While I am sure that Apple would love to Consolidate more OS Dev Efforts, it is only so Practical. You should know that.
But Apple does some of that, and always has. Latest Example: The Apple Silicon-based Servers in their New Personal Computing Cloud are Reportedly Running under a Custom OS (yes, another one!) based on iOS.
So, I think Apple's OSes are already pretty Modular, and they can just spin-up an Optimized Variant of their OS-Tree at any time w

Actually, it wasn't clear. At least not at 4 AM. . .
And Apple already went that totally easy route with iPhones and iPads up until about five years ago. As the two Product Lines matured, Apple obviously concluded (rightly) that the iPhone's screen size and lack of Pencil-Support (again, kind of impractical on a phone, though others have tried) was holding-back what they wanted the iPad to eventually grow into; so they separated the Codebases.

I didn't see BlackMagic or Canon jumping on Content Creation for Quest 3; but both have put significant R&D into creating Hardware and Software Pro-Level Products to Create Spatial Video (a/k/a Immersive Video; like IMAX for the Rest of Us) for Vision Pro.
Which shouldn't be surprising considering the nature of Apple's vision for VR compared to Oculus's. For what I want out of VR I don't really see investments in spatial video as much of a win, but considering the stagnation of VR I'm happy if anything new goes on.

Not surprising to me; but my point was that chas was dismissing all of Apple's Products as mere "Fashion Accessories". That is a uncalled-for Slap in the Face to the thousands of Hardware and Software Engineers, Logistics Experts, etc. that work every day to make these Best-In-Class Systems come to life. And that pisses me off.
