Apple Signals That It's Working on TV+ App for Android Phones (bloomberg.com) 54

Apple is seeking a senior engineer to help build a television and sports app for Android, a sign the company is finally bringing its TV+ service to the rival smartphone platform. From a report: In a job listing published in recent days, Apple said it's looking for someone to lead the development of "fun new features" and "help build an application used by millions to watch and discover TV and sports." The move suggests that the company is looking to gain market share in video streaming -- and is setting aside its rivalry with Android in order to chase additional users. It's rare for Apple to develop software for Google's Android, which competes with its iOS platform. The TV+ service, launched in 2019, is Apple's answer to Netflix or Disney+, and the company has spent heavily on feeding it with original content.

  • Apple will happily develop apps on Android that will help them get more subscribers (as in $$$) to their service.

But they can't make an Android version of Messages because "courage", apparently.

They make the Apple TV app for my LG tv. What are you raging about?

"For profit" company spends money on things that generate profit, doesn't spend money on things that don't. Total fail!

Please don't mix up your conspiracy theories and do try to get the product names right. Try this: "Apple didn't bring iMessage to Android to make it harder to switch platforms". It's plausible, to the point of sounding like it's possibly true even to a skeptic, and doesn't have the side effect of making you look like a paranoid moron.

    • Judging from the comments (and moderation) on this thread, it's clear hell hath no fury like a bunch of Apple fanboy lemmings feeling butthurt from what someone else said about their beloved rotten fruit company.
    • I wouldn't say happily at all.
They've managed not to for years. I think they're just trying to strike things off of the list of potential antitrust liabilities.

I for one, am excited about it, as an Apple and Android user with an AppleTV+ account.
    • Or because Meta would file a complaint for abuse of their monopoly. And the DOJ would act on that.

      2 reasons for that.

      1. No one outside of the US cares about messages.
      2. It won't be long before no-one inside the US cares either.

However this I suspect isn't for phones. They're still adamant about making it harder for people to switch away from Apple. Most new "smart" TVs are some flavour of Android underneath (as well as Amazon devices) and I suspect this is what they're developing for. It may never actually make it to Google play.

  • Android runs on lot's of tv's and settop boxes.

And there is already an Apple TV+ app [google.com] for Android TV, and Amazon FireOS [amazon.com]. But judging by the reviews on the Play Store, I guess that might be why they are looking for Android developers.

I use the app with my Fire Cubes and I have had no issues other than one time last year where AppleTV+ as a whole crashed for 15ish minutes right when one of the MLS games I wanted to watch was starting. Compared to Amazon Video, HBO, and Netflix I think AppleTV+ is actually the best GUI.

I am far from an Apple fanboy so I feel like my review is pretty unbiased.

Since they have an Android TV app I figured they were already practically there for a normal Android mobile app.

          • They should be. The only reason I can't watch it on my gorgeous fucking Galaxy Tab S7+ is because of their normal anticompetitive horse-shit. Works fine on my Android TV though.
      • And there is already an Apple TV+ app [google.com] for Android TV, and Amazon FireOS [amazon.com].

Since the basic Apple TV app functionality already works on Android TV, the developer Apple hires will probably mostly be working on addressing the differences in input (touch vs leanfront).

    • You mean all those "smart" thingies that call home about what you watch (and other things)? Yeah, it's like Android was made for that.
  • But you subscribe to our TV service.

    No, thanks.

  • The programming, not as much, but no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public.
  • 'Twould be oh so nifty to get TV+ on the Meta Quest...

    I'm not optimistic, however.

  • Ahh, so the fabled Android app for Apple TV is gonna be here only 2+ years after they first started showing MLS and even longer since introducing the platform in the first place. Their mantra of "we know what's best" and "just use Apple everything" is entirely at odds with them owning any piece of the streaming pie. To do that you kind of need to not look down and askance at prospective customers, something they've been all too willing to do for years (and evidenced here by only just now thinking that mayb

And they'll counter their blatant hypocrisy by claiming they're doing this because courage!

And the Apple fanboys will still eat it up.

      • Dude, you're a fucking troll.

I don't know who the fuck you're calling a fanboy here, but the people heavily invested in both Apple and Android, myself being one of them, and someone who is very fond of their Apple hardware, are looking forward to this.

Go back to your fucking cave, and quit puking your lame fucking football antics all over the comments.
        • You mad bro?

Oh, and thanks for proving my earlier point [slashdot.org] about how y'all fanboys are so easily triggered. It's almost.... too easy.

          • You mad bro?

Mad? You think calling someone a fucking [expletive] means you're mad?
Are you usually mad when you call someone a fucking [expletive]?

This may be a hard concept for you to grasp, given the obvious intellectual deficiencies you suffer from, but expletives do not signal anger.

Oh, and thanks for demonstrating clearly to everyone that you're a fucking moron. [slashdot.org] engaging in just the lamest fucking trolling.

There should be a "-10, Clueless Fuck" moderating option.

            You mad bro?

            • Great; a new rage filled apple loving sociopath.
              • There it is again.
The word fuck doesn't mean someone is filled with rage or anger.

When I say that you are fucking stupid, it's not because I'm angry that you're stupid, it's because stupid alone without the adjective just doesn't cut it in fully describing you.
            • Oh, and thanks for demonstrating clearly to everyone that you're a fucking moron. [slashdot.org] engaging in just the lamest fucking trolling.

New on Slashdot: stupid troll uses own post as example of what it is to be a 'fucking moron' and '[lame] fucking trolling'. Film at 11.

          • You mad bro?

Says the guy whose froth is dripping from the screen. Do you need help? Don't give yourself up.

    • Well honestly apple can't program their own apps very well so I expect the Android version would be worse.

      • Alll Android apps are worse than the iOS version. The AI app posting you certainly is.
