Apple Releases OS Updates For iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and HomePod (macrumors.com) 13

Apple on Monday rolled out iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17, HomePod 17 and watchOS 10, the latest operating system versions for all its devices minus the Mac lineup. iOS 17: iOS 17 expands on last year's Lock Screen updates with the addition of interactive widgets and StandBy, a new feature that turns the iPhone into a mini home hub when it is charging. You can now see voicemail transcriptions in real time, and leave video messages in FaceTime. FaceTime also now works on the Apple TV with tvOS 17. With NameDrop, exchanging contacts is as simple as touching two phones together, and Messages has been overhauled with new safety features and updates to the way that stickers work. Autocorrect is better than ever, Spotlight search has been improved, private browsing in Safari is more secure with Face ID lock, and there's now a mood tracking feature in the Health app. Passwords can be shared in iCloud Keychain and AirTags can be shared among family members too, plus there are new features for the AirPods Pro. Apple has also added updates to Siri, Mail, Reminders, Notes, Home, and more. tvOS 17: In tvOS 17, Apple has added a FaceTime app for FaceTime calls on a larger screen. The feature works through an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17/iPadOS 17, with the iOS device serving as the camera and the TV serving as the display. With a Split View option, you can place your FaceTime call on one side of the TV and a TV show or game on the other side for SharePlay experiences. [...] Other new features include Dolby Vision 8.1 support, an enhance dialogue option to make it easier to hear what's being said over music and effects, and support for third-party VPN apps.

  • I am getting constant notices that I have a new message, but they are usually stale and it no longer gives me name and subject line when I get an email...

not pleased, wish I could switch it back

    • I searched internet for any issues so far . Your issue is the only one yet aside from the usual battery drain when a new os is installed

        Yeah...I did the same search.

Regardless...my general rule of thumb is to never install first run of anything and wait for the inevitable .1 release.

Like with most things in life, it is usually best to not test the water with both feet, and let others jump in first and see if there are snakes in the lake.

        • I always run the public betas and this one was all over the place. The first release was probably the best PB1 I've ever seen, save for a few annoying keyboard bugs. PB5 was terrible. My camera wouldn't work, the phone overheated constantly, etc. The GM is pretty decent in comparison, and the battery drain isn't too bad after the initial indexing is done.

I will say that this is one of the best iOS updates for old phones that they've ever done. I have an iPhone 11 and things like Siri or starting a search fr

The feature I really hoped for was almost missed if not for a footnote: You can share Air Tags with up to five other people, so I no longer need to borrow my wife's phone to find shared things like keys.

THIS is a lifesaver. I won't get nagged by my phone telling me that I'm being followed by my wife's AirTag every time I borrow her car. I didn't notice it, thanks !

    • I had no idea this was part of the update.

Like you I really want my wife and I both to be able to see the AirTags we have in our luggage and other things... very handy.

    • yes but only members of the same 'famil' that's family in apple speak. I really want this feature but to share items with work colleagues. Why cant we arbitarily assign sharing to any apple id and not just members of the family (which introduces unrequired complications for my use case? ) come on apple that's unlike you to not think of the actual practicle use caes here. Air tags for business tools and inventory , assets would be a fucking amazing feature.

IIRC, all iOS devices need to be on v17 to get this.

  • No Journal yet, though. Apart from that, it's looking good so far.

    • huh. this is actually the main feature im waiting for. I think this is a great idea looking forward to trying it out
  • Balancing the promise of the new hotness with the need for early adopters to do some more post-beta testing...
  • People who have such devices, will get an annoying push notification that they need to update., That update will disable the device for half an hour or so, while my Windows 11 pc installs its updates in seconds. Everyone else simply doesn't care about this "news".
