iPhone and iPad Apps Will Be Available In the Vision Pro App Store By Default (theverge.com) 8

The App Store for Apple's Vision Pro headset will include all compatible iPhone and iPad apps "by default." The Verge reports: In an update on Tuesday, Apple said it will release the new App Store with the developer beta of visionOS this fall. Both iPad and iPhone apps will appear alongside visionOS apps in the new App Store. As Apple has said previously, it will automatically import iOS and iPadOS apps to its new mixed reality operating system "with no additional work required." Developers can still optimize their apps if needed.

"By default, your iPad and/or iPhone apps will be published automatically on the App Store on Apple Vision Pro," Apple notes. "Most frameworks available in iPadOS and iOS are also included in visionOS, which means nearly all iPad and iPhone apps can run on visionOS, unmodified." Developers also have the option of building an app for Vision Pro using Apple's visionOS software development kit.

  • "all compatible"

    • Of course they are compatible. The Vision Pro is an iPad strapped to your face. It'd be more strange if most Apps weren't compatible.

Without SteamVR compatibility, this thing is going nowhere, they may get some niche userbase out of it, but it'll be a niche of a niche since VR users are already a small group to begin with. Apple choosing to create a walled garden out the gate will ensure it's DOA.

  • Because what I want from a $3500 experience is an app not designed for it.

Although kudos to Apple for finally realising selling a hyper expensive device with no content or apps is not the best way forward. Baby steps Apple. Baby Steps.

Honestly, what I most want is a way to run Mac apps. The iOS ecosystem is largely a consumption ecosystem, whereas the Mac ecosystem has more breadth and depth. I realize Mac apps won't be particularly user-friendly in that environment, but neither will iOS apps. The difference is that Mac app support would make these things generally useful for everything I do, whereas iOS app support wouldn't even get me 10% of the way there.

I mean yes, I could always use it as a glorified input device by running a VLC
