Apple Accidentally Releases iOS 17 Developer Beta To the Public (engadget.com) 13

Apple is supposed to release an iOS 17 public beta in July, but the company inadvertently gave users an early peek. From a report: As AppleInsider explains, Connor Jewiss and other users have noticed that the iOS 17 developer beta was available to install in the Beta Updates section of Settings whether or not you paid for the necessary account. The macOS Sonoma and watchOS 10 previews have been available this way, too.

We wouldn't count on any of the developer betas being available as we write this. As it is, you likely won't want to install them. These are the first pre-release versions available to people outside of Apple, and they're the most likely to include bugs and app compatibility issues. That could cause problems if you install them on must-have devices. Unless you're a developer who wants to start preparing app updates, you're probably better off waiting until either the public beta or the finished version releases this fall.

They are 6 years behind. It's 2023 already.
    • It's OK - Microsoft is only at 11 and Linux is only at 6.

Well it depends I suppose if Linux==Linux kernel, then you are right if you are referring to whatever distros package (ie kernel + userspace etc) then it's anybodys guess. And no, I'm not trying to start a Linux vs GNU/Linux vs GNU+Linux war here, we have the GNU extremists for that

    "Accidentally"? Sure...

"I got a copy of something I shouldn't have!! ZOMG!!!!"

You're just being used by Apple.

  • While it's really tempting to be the first on the block, I'm wondering what the heck people are thinking.

Would you take a "new car" off the assembly line unfinished because the door was left open?
Would you eat a watermelon that isn't ripe?
Would you use a power drill that has no motor because "one day they'll release the motor but at least I had the drill first on my block"?
When is there that inevitable bug (remember, even their release code has bugs and they re-release to fix) will you blame Apple, the app-

I get enough of a "beta" experience with the official .0 releases...

Ditto. I will just wait until stable. I really wished companies would stop using major versions for minor updates. Also, stop adding new features in minor updates.

Yea we al wish such policies where set by devs instead of pr that needs to create a steady stream of "news items", but sadly that is not the world we live in.
  • I love all of these "so and so" company "leaked" this photo/software/release date/spec. 99% of these leaks, are on purpose. Either to beta test something, or to promote tech buzz. Free advertising!

This wasn't an accident, Apple has just changed their policy to allow developers without a paid account to download such. They've eliminated the $99 Developer fee, which is now only required for additional developer resources.

Parts that positively cannot be assembled in improper order will be.
