New iPad Only Supports First-Gen Apple Pencil, Requires Adapter To Charge (macrumors.com) 44

The new, 10th-generation iPad only supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, meaning that it requires an adapter to charge separately via a wired connection since the device has moved to USB-C. MacRumors reports: The new iPad has no magnetic wireless charger on the side to connect to the second-generation Apple Pencil. Only the first-generation Apple Pencil is supported by the device, which normally needs to be plugged into a Lightning port to charge. The iPad now has a USB-C port, meaning that the Apple Pencil can no longer be charged directly via the iPad. Entry-level iPad users who want to use the Apple Pencil will need to charge the accessory using a USB-C cable and a separate adapter.

The first-generation Apple Pencil came with a female to female Lightning adapter allowing it to be charged separately, but now Apple is offering a new variant of the accessory called the "USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter" that enables Apple Pencil users to charge. The adapter is available separately at a price of $9 for existing Apple Pencil users, while new Apple Pencil units include the adapter in the box.
For those interested in a more powerful tablet, Apple announced the new sixth-generation iPad Pro, featuring the M2 chip that first debuted in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro earlier this year and support for Wi-Fi 6E.

Apparently apple forgot all their design principles this time around?
    • Yeah, apparently you can't use an iPencil Pro with it for whatever arbitrary reason. I do remember that Apple obsoleted 18 month old iMacs (which were USB only) when the original iPod (FireWire only) came out.

It takes a lot of courage to put only one connector on a tablet instead of two.

Even the older iPads were stupid when it came to the pencil. To charge it from the iPad you had to plug it in, i.e. it would be sticking out downwards away from the iPad's port.

Some manufacturers use wireless charging when the pencil is in its magnetic dock on the side of the device.

Buy it anyway. It's got an Apple logo.

    • Yep, Apple owners are used to buying "special adapters" for just about everything the rest of the world takes for granted, eg. SD cards, USB sticks, HDMI connectors, etc.

What's one more adapter to them?

  • Make something that is not plug and play with existing products, and don't include any accessories, adapters, or chargers with the device. More sales of stuff.

Be glad they haven't yet moved on to 'battery not included'. Although that would require allowing the user to change the battery... I know, Apple can include an epoxy kit with the battery - they should do it, it will be funny

No it wouldn’t, that’s the neat part. Why not go all the way and modularize the phone, but only with authorized and signed components. Force an assembly to only accept a configuration approved and physically assembled at an Apple store. But this isn’t where the innovation is, you then only rent the components making them require repurchase to keep working. Sure, customers will complain, but when you make the up front cost for quality hardware super cheap, people will still spend even

I realize that you are being a bit tongue-in-cheek here about this but..

Would you mind terribly explaining the logistics of this?

Or was the joke also that Apple would somehow also ultimately control every country's telecommunications infrastructures, including all applicable legislative bodies, because that sort of outcome isn't obvious from the premises you've mentioned, but is what would ultimately b

It plays off the misconception you buy things from the App Store or iTunes. When people try to leave $1000s of stuff in their will they find out it’s non transferable and they don’t own anything. Stands to reason that increasing growth without end will keep entrenching these practices to the point you won’t own anything at all, even the phone.

What kind of person thinks that digital content has any financial value in their estate?
            • Likely more people than naught. They don’t know you can’t transfer accounts, they think of it like sharing Netflix. Even Bruce Willis got in on the confusion.
              • by mark-t ( 151149 )

It's not even an issue of being transferable or nor. The inherent ephemeral nature of digital content means that it does not and cannot have any kind of objectively measurable financial worth.

Objectively, digital content is just a bunch of 1's and 0's that do not have any value at all, so even in cases where it might be transferable, digital content can ultimately only have sentimental or personal value Such value doesn't add to a person's net worth, so it is meaningless to assign a monetary value to i

The Apple Pencil wasn't really designed for iPad. It was designed for iPad Pro. They later added support for non-pro iPad models, but the second revision of the Pencil has never worked with standard iPad models — only Pro, Air, and Mini models.

But what's interesting here is that the new iPad uses the same SoC as the iPad Air 4th generation, and even slightly newer Bluetooth hardware, which strongly suggests that this is either A. a bug or B. a marketing decision to use this as part of an upselling s

  • ... for doing this? Were there some technical problems with the wireless pencil charging that they didn't have time to remedy before release, or what?
  • OK, Apple, you finally got rid of that garbage lightning connector that charges at a tiny fraction of the speed of USB-C...but was it worth $120 more plus you dropped the headphone jack...while leaving the storage obscenely small and expensive? I have an autistic kid and while he is fortunately verbal, he has many classmates that can only speak through an iPad.

Most apple devices are a luxury, that's the one device in their portfolio that really is essential. For now, folks can still buy the old version, but in a few years, they will be gone. I have no issues with them overcharging me for my 13" iPad pro...I freely chose to pay that price and if I don't like it, it's my own damn fault. Back then "special needs" included stuff like dyslexia too, which we now understand does not mean that the child is thick or incapable of learning. Bad times indeed, for a lot of people.

However, my kids gets along fine with a cheap Fire 10 tablet.

    • Logi Base [logitech.com] might help with your charging cable issues.
    • Also kids with severe autism NEED iPads for AAC and PECS apps. IPads are staples for most school children. At $280 to $330, it's slightly pricey, but worth it

The biggest story here is that people think they NEED iPads. Maybe let's not base school systems or medical intervention around a product from a for profit tech company with infamous vendor lock-in.

  • Guess those guys researching and developing new products, are kinda lazy and fail to account for things like this. Easy to make a check list of things to look forward to and address in future iterations don't ya think?

Seriously, this is effectively an iPad Air, but with the A14 bionic chip, instead of the M1.
    It's ... fairly stupid.
Seems to me, from all the reviews I've seen, if you really want an iPad, just get the current cheapest 9th gen.

Or just keep using whatever phone you have.

  • Apple are run by a supply chain expert. Hence they keep making older models of devices to use up inventory, despite their limitations. Apple claim to be woke and green, and in some cases are the latter, but milk their addicted trend following fanbois for a laugh. In our local Apple Store, a short Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable is £119, that's about, uhm, $125. WTF? I bought a small but good quality Chinese 10" LCD monitor from Amazon for £100/$125 and it came with not just a USB-A to C cable,
  • Carrying an adapter would freak out most ipad fans. But if you have a macbook, you usally have to carry around USB-c multi hub (it keeps the mac design sleek!). An adapters are common for people with PC's so who cares.
  • I'm genuinely curious about this. The first gen iPad pencil was well and truly large enough to fit a AAAA battery like the competition did, and that battery from the competition lasts close to a year of heavy use and can be swapped out in seconds.

    WTF Apple!

    • Yeah, I've got one of these (was supplied by my employer). The Pencil is useful for whiteboarding, sure, but I hate both modes of charging. It really feels like design went out the window when they were making these:

Take the cap off and plug its male end into the Lightning connector on the iPad. Now the thing is sticking out perpendicular to the iPad and feels like the two have taken over my entire desk's width, and feels really, really fragile. Like if I accidentally pick up one or the other the wrong wa
  • Does the 2nd gen Pencil work at all with the new iPad or is this just the charging feature?
