Chinese Phonemaker Starts Copying iPhone 14's 'Dynamic Island' (macrumors.com) 35

tlhIngan writes: The iPhone 14's "dynamic island" feature is where the pinhole used for the front facing camera is replaced by a pill shaped cutout that can be filled with "useful" snippets of information. It's basically used to help hide the black hole caused by the pinhole camera (as an alternative to the notch) or pill by multiple cameras. Apparently the feature is so innovative, Chinese cellphone company realme is asking its fans for ideas on how to copy, but not copy, the feature. They're asking for submissions in images, GIFs, text or other form on how a "realme Island" should work.

      But Apple won't.

No bets on what Android will do with the area, when they copy it. Badly.

  • Did they get there after a 3 hour tour?

The LG V10 had a similar thing. We don't accuse Apple of copying, do we?

Don't you know? Apple invented every cellphone technology in the last 40 years.
      • It's cute that they finally got that Always On Display which Samsung phones have had for years. They're funny when they try and play catchup.

        • Yeah, that's what Apple is known for. Being perpetually behind the times.

Jobs famously said that great artists steal. It isn't the first time either, LG invented slide to unlock, and they copied features like the notification shade and widgets directly from Android. I'm sure there are other examples of phone manufacturers stealing Apple's ideas too.

For some reason it's news when a Chinese company does it. Hmm.

          • Jobs famously said that great artists steal.

And then infamously sued Samsung because he claimed they stole.

They did finally get wireless charging... it only took about 5 years from the time Android phones had it.

        • Yeah, I dunno. First thing I did with my 14 was turn off the always on display.

Why the fuck would I want the display to be on all the time?

I wish I could turn off "dynamic island" too.

Samsung had it first, only because they held most of the early patents for OLED technology (it was a massive R&D focus for them), and so either refused to sell OLED panels to other Smartphone OEMs for a price that made sense; or even sell them at all to competitors. They were also a single-source for OLED panels for quite awhile, and that violates Apple's (and many others') component "Sourcing" Rules.

      Hardly the same thing.

If anything, the V10's Shortcuts Bar was closer to a fixed "Dock" area. Not only is it a fixed waste-of-display-space; but I don't think it was useful for any dynamic, realtime info/Notifications.

Plus, didn't LG have such an epic fail in the smartphone arena that they simply gave up?

  • Yeah ever since the Apple event, I've been waiting to see news that knockoffs are being built from one particular country... not that I was excited to see it, but just knew that it would show up one way or another.

    • How is this their problem? Don't buy phones that have holes punched in the fucking display.

  • Always imitating never innovating.

So, this dynamic island stuff is serious hand-waving psychology stuff. Greatly enlarge the pinhole area and then add images on the enlarged area to fool the user into ignoring the pinhole. Why not just have a fake edge-to-edge black bezel with notifications instead? Or just have the same pinhole that other phones already have? Is this really a desirable feature?

    • It's basically a nicely animated infobar/notification pop up. It won't increase your productivity by even one second any more than clicking an item on a top menu bar.

I will probably be down voted for asking this does any smartphone tech improve productivity? I personally don't carry one after watching the way people seem to be addicted to them, people pull them out whenever they have a spare moment to scroll social media feeds or play games you rarely see them being used for productivity beyond calendar or email. In general the whole format looks like it is made for wasting time ingesting media and not real work.
    • It's psychology, all right. The "island" is a great excuse to have a standardized location for constant pop-up notifications. Eventually, it will be seen as a hugely profitable in indispensable resource for ads, and therefore companies will keep thinking up new excuses for it to exist whether it's a good idea or not.

I don't think it will go away any time soon.

    • Or just have the same pinhole that other phones already have?

Because Apple never figured out how to make a pinhole. They have a big ugly arse tab blocking a significant chunk of the top bezel and they were rightly mocked for it.

  • Surprised since these are made in China, that one of the knock off companies doesn't already have one ready to go.
  • As a Chinese, I have to Google to find out what shi company is. I don't really see the point of referring such a small and unpopular company as Chinese phonemaker.....
  • For each phone they manufacture, a 200-nautical mile radius around the dynamic island will be claimed as Chinese territory.

The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. And vice versa.

Working...
