Apple is Reportedly Working on a Foldable iPhone for 2023 (engadget.com) 30
Rumors about a foldable iPhone have bubbled up before, but a new one has more credibility. From a report: Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told investors that Apple plans to launch an 8-inch foldable iPhone by 2023, according to documents seen by Engadget. The report, based on an "industry survey," predicts that Apple plans to sell 15-20 million units in 2023. Kuo said already revealed the possibility of a folding iPhone in March, but his latest report has more detail on suppliers. It predicts that the QHD+ flexible OLED will be supplied by Samsung Display, while the DDI display controller will come from Samsung Foundry. It also notes that Apple will use silver nanowire touch tech supplied by TPK, "because of its several advantages over [Samsung's] Y-Octa technology."

This is no experiment. It's just another me too copy of existing Android phones that stupid followers will claim they invented.
No so much invented but they will get it right or much better than the competition. I'll point to the iPod/iPhone/iPad, none were the original in the market but each not only changed the market but changed it so much that previous efforts look pathetic. Now with the exception of phones for visually, physically, or special use cases almost every phone looks like an iPhone. if you look at form and function that changed with the iPhone, when history looks back it will look like apple invented it .

Will it just be a copy of the Samsung Fold with iOS, or will Apple use that folding feature in a more unique way.
Apple is usually a few years behind in the technology, but when they do release it they work out a lot of the problems that the first movers have.

Apple don't make the screens so they are basically reliant on whatever Samsung or one of the Chinese manufacturers can come up with. Looking at the latest Huawei foldable they seem to have made significant progress in terms of making the fold radius tighter and decreasing the crease when open, as well as improving the surface durability and feel.
By 2023 the tech should be pretty much perfected and hopefully the price will come down too.

At best this is a guess by an analyst because someone else predicted foldable phones will sell so many units in the future. So rampant speculation based other speculation. I found no actual evidence that could substantiate anything like Apple ordering parts like foldable screens. The story itself had this:

When it becomes apparent that most people just use one side for the keyboard, they'll offer a version with a nice comfortable clicking keyboard on the other half. Then they'll make it smaller because people don't want to carry around something so big. Better yet, to solve security problems they'll limit the functionality and do away with general-purpose app installs. Don't worry though. It'll have the iSnake game. Suggested price, $1999.
