Due to Covid-19, Apple Closes Nearly a Fifth of Its Retail Stores (9to5mac.com) 43

"New COVID-19 restrictions and worsening outbreaks have compelled Apple to temporarily close nearly one fifth of its retail stores during one of the busiest shopping weeks of the holiday season," reports 9to5Mac. 401 of Apple's 509 locations worldwide remain open as of publication. Most open locations in the US are limited to Express storefront pickup of online orders and Genius Support. Walk-in shopping and customers without an appointment are not accepted at Express locations.
The site also notes that Apple recently re-closed all 18 of its stores across Germany and the Netherlands. And the Verge confirms more store closings in the U.S. and around the world: Every California store, all four in Tennessee, all three in Utah, all four in Minnesota, two in Oklahoma, and the stores in Portland, Oregon; Anchorage, Alaska; Omaha, Nebraska; and Albuquerque, New Mexico are all closed this upcoming week — as well as the 16 additional stores in the U.K., Mexico and Brazil starting tomorrow, December 20th. It's not hard to guess why the stores are reclosing, particularly in California where COVID-19 saw its four deadliest days yet in a row last week as part of an ongoing surge, and in London where Prime Minister Boris Johnson has just put the city in emergency lockdown starting midnight.

But a lot arenâ(TM)t. The point is that Apple is choosing acknowledge the pandemic and responding by not maximizing sales. Apple being profitable and well managed has the ability to do this without great sacrifice, so the credit they get it minimal. It is not like hobby lobby where desperation makes them discount the one of the most religious days of the year.

Many non-essential retail shops aren't related to news for nerds.

The govt closed _all_ stores. Apple had no say whatsoever in this.

We're in lockdown. Apple stores are anything but essential. So they are not allowed to stay open. I know big corporations think they are beyond the law, but there are actually cops going around, making sure they are closed, so they did not exactly have a choice.

They could try food delivery for 20EUR shakes of green juice ... make that 50EUR, because otherwise it's clearly not a good product .. or sell actual paper iBooks for 500EUR ... to stay open. ;)

    • Apple stores are anything but essential.

Are stores like T-Mobile open? Just wondering if there is a way for someone to get phone & Internet if they don't already have it, as those are essential.

      • Are stores like T-Mobile open?

I live in a minor city in southwestern Germany. I just googled for the Deutsche Telekom shops here . . . and all three are tagged as "Temporarily Closed".

But, bizarrely, while walking to the supermarket since the full metal lockdown, I noticed that the Lindt Chocolate store on the main market square, that usually serves tourists, was open.

I guess that they can squeak through the lockdown by claiming that chocolate is "essential foodstuffs".

      • Just wondering if there is a way for someone to get phone & Internet if they don't already have it

The only people who can't get a phone and internet if they don't already have phone and internet are tourists and they are banned too. A normal person would just ask a friend, family or neighbour for help to order them something they need.

        • A normal person would just ask a friend, family or neighbour for help to order them something they need.

How are you going to do that while inside your home without a phone??

          • Typically people will walk to their front door, open it, then walk to their neighbours, or catch a train to their friend, or do whatever a normal functioning person with two legs would do. Or a functioning person without legs and a wheel chair.

    • If Apple stores are closed then where will Apple zombies go for their stupidity transfusion?

    • In France they could be open but they are in pick-up mode only. In Dubai, everything is open but they limit the number of people in their shop at a lower numer than other shops. My experience is that Apple is extra carefull about covid.
  • 80% of Apple stores remain open during the pandemic!!!

    Quick .. stop the presses.

    THIS IS NEWS!!!

    • Apple is converting its remaining 80% of stores to emergency zombie wards for any customers not already infected with covid.

  • or February. The Hospitals are already at or near capacity. We'll see "death panels" soon (e.g. people who need hospitalization will be turned away for lack of staff to treat them).

It's frustrating because the experts and medical community are all talking about it and nobody's listening. The GOP has agreed to a measly $600 stimulus and only that because it was hurting them in the Georgia Senate Run offs and they want want to hold the Senate so they can spend the next 4 years causing trying to hurt the c
    • The GOP isn't going to run Romney in 2024. If for no other reason than he's not horrible. He seems to believe in the constitution and democracy. But, more importantly, he voted guilty during Trump's impeachment. He's the senator from Utah and never moving up in the world.

Being that the pandemic has been around for a year, putting it into a computing context, that's like closing an application before saving your data.

  • The other 80% of Apple stores should be closed for acute vanity aggravated by chronic stupidity.

  • The stores here are all open and strong. Indiana is open for business and is balancing well the needs for safety and economic security.

You know you've landed gear-up when it takes full power to taxi.
