Apple Races To Push Ahead With 5G iPhone Mass Production (techcrunch.com) 21

Apple is pushing its suppliers to try to reduce production delays for its first 5G iPhones as the U.S. tech company aims to limit the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. From a report: Apple is facing delays of between four weeks and two months for mass production of the four models in its 5G lineup after postponements caused by factory lockdowns and workplace absences during the pandemic, sources told the Nikkei Asian Review. Apple has been betting heavily on the 5G range to help it against rivals including Samsung and Huawei Technologies, which introduced 5G-capable smartphones last year. But sources said Apple has aggressively tried to cut delays and was now less likely to face a worst-case scenario of postponing the launch until 2021, the situation it was in three months ago. The estimated delays are based on the stage that development would normally be at for a release in September.

The tech giant and its suppliers are working overtime to make up for lost time, people with knowledge of the matter said. "What the progress looks like now is months of delay in terms of mass production, but Apple is doing everything it can to shorten the postponement. There's a chance that the schedule could still be moved ahead," one of the sources told Nikkei. California, where Apple is based, came under "shelter at home" restrictions in March, though the order was revised in June to allow more businesses to reopen. Part of Apple's hardware development team returned to the head office last month as the company attempted to expedite the final configuration of the new iPhones and keep as close as possible to the intended September release date, according to another source familiar with the situation.

Why is this news on Slashdot?

    Just asking...

It's a warning. Best to steer clear of 1st generation Apple products anyway but this one is rushed too. Better not pre-order, at least wait and see what comes out.

      • You are funny!

But seriously, folks are forewarned to steer clear of whatever Apple will "spew" out in the next few months.

    • Indeed! No mention of Trump, or democrats, or black lives matter. This is nothing more than a story about a technology company. This isn't Slashdot material.

At least they could have slipped a 'Tim Apple' in there.

    • Because it is technology related? Heck it is more apt on Slashdot than a lot of other Slashdot articles.

There are a lot of people who have/want to upgrade their Apple products such as iPhones despite what some angry at life Slashdot poster says actually likes the device and would like to get a new device. However they are holding off for 5G Support so they can use the feature when it gets to their area.

Tech companies have to play an interesting game where they want to show the promise of their next big inn

Because the Apple Antivirus doesn't catch the 5G Covid-virus yet, that come over the air.

Probably because this site is filled with Apple fanboys, and we'll click on any headline with the word Apple in it.

Personally, I have no interest in upgrading my 18 month old cell phone at the moment. I'd imagine that a lot of people are in the same boat as I am, and we're socking away savings just in case my job gets impacted by COVID. If Apple wants to wait until 2021 to release these phones, that's fine with me.

    • Because ... Apple nerds.

The link that I'm seeing goes to an article on TikTok, not Apple.
  • Wasn't it only a few months ago that everyone was saying Apple is oh so smart for waiting and not releasing a 5G product?

    • Thats the beauty of being a blind apple follower, whatever apple currently is preaching is great and right and better then anyone else.
  • Sooo, most cell phone data plans have low data caps, soft or otherwise. Say it’s 20GB, at nearly 1Gb/s that data plan is gone in under 2 minutes. You sacrifice the penetrating power and wide area coverage with little problem in bandwidth for a technology that essentially requires line of sight and you basically need a phased antenna array on the phone to make it work. It’s like the

having a Lambo with a shot glass gas tank because freeways are crowded so make your 2 mile commute at 217mph like everyone else, and we’ll all be fine

    business plan makes sense.

  • I think Apple is accelerating too much!
5G Is far beyond a user can get!

  • I don't want to be the "no one will ever need more than 640k" guy, but what's the point of 5g for most people?

I can already watch videos, play music, use video zoom, do email with large attachments, text large images, and so on with 4G.

I've never seen anyone say what the big benefit is to the typical consumer for 5g.

What am I not getting? What's the big deal with 5g? What purpose does it serve when I already have 4G LTE?

    • by jetkust ( 596906 )
As far as phones go, I don't think anyone (consumers) cares about 5g, unless it means increases their data cap. 5g would be more useful if it could be used as a home internet replacement or on other devices like smart tvs, streaming boxes, game consoles or VR/AR headsets.
    • Well, at your current bandwidth, it can take hours to exceed your data cap and rack up fees. With 5g, you can go from zero to capped in seconds flat. Think of that treasure trove of untapped fines just out of reach with 4g and tell me this 5g offers nothing valuable.
      • Personally I am wouldn't touch a phone without 5G. Probably one that saves me so much money. I can afford a better phone plan... But in reality I with use the same bandwidth just get my content significantly quicker. iPhone simply out of date
