Apple Posts Record Revenue As iPhone Sales Smash Expectations (cnbc.com) 47

Apple reported revenue and profit significantly higher than what Wall Street analysts expected. According to CNBC, "Apple's revenue was up 9% to $91.8 billion," thanks in large part to iPhone revenue, "which was up 8% on the strength of new iPhone models." The report also that Apple's "Other Products" did $10 billion in sales during the quarter, and that Apple Watch, AirPods, and Beats headphones alone would be a "Fortune 150" company. Here's how Apple did compared to Refinitiv consensus estimates: EPS: $4.99 vs. $4.55 estimated
Revenue: $91.8 billion vs. $88.50 billion estimated
iPhone revenue: $55.96 billion vs. $51.62 billion estimated
Services revenue: $12.7 billion vs. $13.07 billion estimated
Other products revenue: $10 billion vs. $9.52 billion estimate
Gross margin: 38.4% vs. 38.1% estimated
Q2 revenue guidance: $63 billion to $67 billion vs. $62.45 billion
Q2 margin guidance: 38% to 39% vs. 38.2%
"Apple's range of guidance for next quarter is wider than typical," the report concludes, "a change that Cook attributed to uncertainty caused by the deadly coronavirus, which has shut down travel in parts of China."

If you can sell $1000 iPhones you might as well start selling $2000 ones. There seems to be an endless demand.

    • Their most popular phone is $700, not $1000.
      • Thats nice. Thanks for sharing!

Flippant answer aside, KixWooder just kicked the legs out from your assertion that "there seems to be an endless demand".

        Suddenly... A HOPE!

    • My wife was able to trade in her iPhone 8 with $700 credit for an 11 for $630. Not sure who's funding this between TMobile or Apple, but some I'd check the accounting for future charges on Apple. I doubt T-Mobil took that entire hit.

My wife would buy one. Or two. Or one of each color so they match her purses.

    • Apple didn't invent $1000 price tags for cell phones.

Apple didn't invent $1000 price tags for cell phones.

Nope. Motorola did. The first brick cellphones were around $3000 each for a measly 1 hour of talk time and maybe 12 hours standby, which you invested in at least 2 or 3 spare batteries to get you through the day.

And these were the big beefy 1980s dollars not the wimpy inflated dollars of today.

  • I've owned 3 iPhones, 5, 5s and I just got an SE last month. They were great deals too, I hope Apple can keep delivering such compelling and competitive devices.

    • The announcement of the iPhone SE2/iPhone 9 should only be a few weeks away, a few months at the most.

    • I have also owed three. The iPhone 5, 6s Plus, and XS Max. That is 3 phones in 7 years (this will be the 8th).

I replaced the 5 to get the much bigger screen in the 6s Plus (I cannot see well). I replaced the 6s Plus because I put it in a pocket full of water (unknowingly) on the one day it was out of its case (long story). Not sure when I will replace the XS Max. Either when it breaks or Apple comes out with a compelling new feature I want.

    • I love my SE. It was the last iPhone that will fit in your shirt pocket.
  • I bought the 11 in December - after using a 6 Plus since it was released (5 years?). The latter had become really quite slow, and had problems loading big web pages. I gave it to my dad who was still using my old 4S. He’s mainly using it for phone, whatsapp and facetime - still good enough for that.
Anyway, the standard 11 is indeed a nice device. And I especially love its camera. The quality even for evening shots is remarkable.
  • This looks to me like a market reaction to Apple's refusal to install a government backdoor into iOS. This causes the phone to be perceived as more secure than their competition.

Even if one could claim they're not really secure, Apple is the only company that's obviously trying.

See, other suppliers: People DO want security and privacy (and are willing to pay for it.)

No, Apple is claiming to be trying.

The government can get in anyway, they just make noise about not being able to for political reasons.

    • Oh kid. The ONLY reason Apple phones are more locked down, is because Apple's whole selling point is "You are literally too dumb for this, so let me lock you into a tightly controlled prison partonize you like you're not even a person.".
And insecure and incompetent people flock to that because it allows them to be so lazy they're only passively taking part in "their" own lives. They are trading being an independent person for cheap convenience.

Now I get it: It's an easy way to get by as a lifeform. Kinda li

  • This is so easily explained, if you look at the sales patterns of previous years.

2014 - iPhone 6 came out with many long-awaited features such as a bigger screen and other nice-to-haves. Not only was this a homerun phone in it's own right, it came at a time where the competition was having huge problems. This led to many people buying an iPhone 6.
2015 - iPhone 6s came out. Since the iPhone 6 was such a smash hit, 6S continued that trend. No reason to buy it over a 6 of course, but for everyone else, a great

  • Even more so, than Trump.

The company focusing on ripping off clueless dumb people with patronizing glass beads^Wslabs, makes the most money.

We get it. You dislike Apple. You're not even alone.

But your time and energy could be much better spent doing something actually constructive, instead of spewing hate all over Slashdot. Go outside. Take a walk. Maybe develop a talent or create something. But this schtick of hating on people for using a product you likely don't even understand is just pathetic.

    • It's people like you that resulted in Trump becoming the president of the USA. Really unlikeable asshats calling people dumb, just because they don't share your taste in mobile devices.

It's people like you, and Don Lemon, that will result in Trump being re-elected. That's right, Trump is going to be your president until 2025. Dwell on that for a while, motherfucker.
