Apple Plans Netflix-Like Gaming Subscription Services, Report Says (cheddar.com) 39

According to a new report from Cheddar, Apple is planning a Netflix-like subscription service for games. "The service would function like Netflix for games, allowing users who pay a subscription fee to access a bundled list of titles," reports Cheddar. "Apple began privately discussing a subscription service with game developers in the second half of 2018, said the people, all of whom requested anonymity to discuss unannounced plans." From the report: It's unclear how much the subscription will cost or what kind of games Apple will offer. The service is still in the early stages of development, and Apple could ultimately decide to abandon it. The company has also discussed partnering with developers as a publisher, according to two people familiar with the talks, which could signal Apple's ambition to assume distribution, marketing, and other related costs for select games. While it's unclear what kinds of games would be included, a subscription service for App Store games could provide a boost to Apple's recurring revenue at a time when iPhone sales are slowing and gaming and esports are booming. Mobile gaming is expected to become a $100 billion industry by 2021, according to the gaming and esports intelligence firm Newzoo.

    They would have to get a lot of publishers on board for that to get any traction though...

    Maybe, maybe it would work if they bundle that, and the video stuff they are doing, all along with the Apple Music subscription people already use. Similar to what Amazon does with Prime.

      For the Apple market, the digital country club market. Likely the only subscription for gaming should be various MMO games linked togethor. Create a toon and run it across various game, pay a sunscription not for one MMO but all MMOs that are part of the library. Different MMOs for different play styles but still linked togethor. So you a paying a subscription not for one MMO but many, something like 10 or more. Need to be creative though. The Apple audience is a creative audience, it needs to be done prope

        Hmm, maybe, but how is Apple going to get any kind of quality MMOs in on this plan?

        I'll wait to see what they have in mind but I honestly cannot think what Apple could come up with

  • a big external GPU.
    A new computer design with a real GPU inside and less thermal considerations.
    An OS that supports and keeps up with the needs of GPU, CPU and sound code.
    The ability for the OS to support a CPU and GPU to get full 4K and 5K frame rates.
    Not allow OS version drift to alter such CPU and GPU support again and again.
    An OS thats game aware and has the OS support to keep games working long term.
    • With Apple, it not only needs to be 'invented here.' It needs to have been 'invented here' within the last several years.

    Games are not substitute goods. See all the "exclusive" content that's ruining video streaming already? Now imagine people willingly pay $60 or more for one of these titles, then play it more than even the most fanatical watcher of The Office could imagine.

  • I asked Slashdot [slashdot.org] this question 2 weeks ago but I wasn't thinking of just games but all apps. Sure games will have the highest screen time but it would be nice to have an app launch and glance minimum which then earns on a per minute basis.
    The freemium model has made the App stores a toxic place for the majority app publishers as users have come to expect everything for free, including free from adverts. If your app is used regularly then why not get paid for that % it is used out of a subscription pot.
