People Are Drilling Holes Into Their iPhone 7 To 'Make a Headphone Jack' (craveonline.com) 201
TechRax -- a popular YouTuber who destroys technology for fame and riches -- has uploaded a video where he drills a hole into an iPhone 7, claiming it to be a "secret hack" to reinstall a headphone jack in the device. The only problem is that he didn't tell people it was a joke, and of course, some people fell for it. Crave Online reports: The YouTube video has amassed over 7.5 million views since being posted online last week, with it attracting 81,000 dislikes in the process. The comments section is currently torn between people who are in on the joke, people who criticize TechRax for damaging his iPhone 7, and most unfortunately, people who have tried the "hack" out for themselves. Although this is YouTube so you can never be quite sure of whether or not these folks are trolling, parsing the comments section reveals some pretty convincing complaints lobbed in TechRax's direction. It's also firmly believable that there are people dumb enough to attempt drilling a hole into their iPhone 7, which is unfortunate but that's the way the world is in 2016. You can read the comments under the YouTube video for more "convincing complaints." But as if the report didn't make it clear enough already, the video is a joke. Apple removed the headphone jack and there's no way to get it back, unless you use an adapter.

Yes, someone posted on youtube, "stop complaining, it worked for me." I asked if a 2.5mm drill bit will work as I have 2.5mm earphone, someone replied he doesn't see why it would not. However, I can't really check if these internet posts are true because I don't have an iPhone7.

So the user completed step One..... now the tricky bit is Step 2, which is to attach some wires to the solder pads they removed the headphone jack component from, attach the opposite ends of the wire to a headphone receptacle, and mount the headphone receptacle to the whole you drilled.

IIRC their 1st gen ipod touch didn't even have a built in speaker but it did have a headphone jack.

But only if you were using your disks with single side devices and you also had to make a notch or you couldn't write anything. I was using double side drives and doing this would have erased the data.
That may have been for 5.25" disks... I think you also had to cut a hole in the case for the optical revolution sensor. I've seen it done, but it was very messy, e.g. the bottom of the disk cut open to remove the actual disk so the sensor hole could be cut without damaging the disk.
What the grandparent post is probably thinking of is 3.5" disks, which had an optical sensor and a hole to tell the drive if it was low density (720k) or high density (1.44M). The theory went that they were economising by makin

None of the 5.25 drives back then used the optical position sensor hole (maybe Compucolor, it has been a LONG time). That was a holdover from 8 inch floppies.

All of the computers with "standard" disk controller chips used the index hole. (And some CP/M machines were hard sectored, which definitely requires it. That one time I tried to format a 5 1/4" floppy that I didn't realize was hard-sectored was certainly interesting.) I know the TRS-80 used the index hole (I usually made a rough index hole with an X-acto knife), and Atari used it too (I've seen it in the XF551 code).

Commodore didn't use the index hole or hard sectors.
Commodore's disk format had a variable number of sectors per track. They took advantage of the fact that the outer tracks on the disk are physically longer, and can therefore fit more sectors at the same bit density. Hard sectoring would have been impossible.

The 5.25" 360k Full height Single sided drives that were in the OG IBM XT computers could put twice as much on a Double Sided Disk, if you cut the notch on the opposite side of the case.

Unlike anyone else, that was a single side drive so you had to flip the disc over. But to write to the other side you had to cut a whole for the optical write protect check, but not into the actual magnetic disc.
