3. You need to organize some way of getting these computers to the people who need them instead of making some grandstand bullshit critique of other people. I'm sure if it came down to donating the computer or using it for a punching-bag, there would be no question where the computer would go. But you aren't organizing, are you?
Ultimately, things like this can raise money for people to use in more meaningful ways, like a fundraiser to buy food for a family. But to say that the computers themselves have an implicit value is complete bullshit.
Average people need solutions to their problems, not more problems to deal with. They don't need to spend months learning how to use their computer before they can use it. They don't need to deal with headache upon headache trying to get their computer to run right.
This "Let them eat computers" pseudo-liberal bullshit doesn't do anyone any good. Unless you're willing to give up a couple of years of your life to teach these people how to run Red Hat 5, OpenBSD, or Debian Linux, these old computers aren't going to do them any good.
I mean, really--do you really expect people to derive some kind of monetary income from having one of these machines? Do you really think that it's going to liberate them, or bring them something they need? If they want to compile any of the major software products for Linux, they'll be waiting days.
I don't mean to flame here, if you're working on a way for these computers to be useful (other than as terminal servers) then great, I'll eat every word here.

All other events on that day were just to spice it all up a little. And that worked! Yes, there were 5 old PC's striped from any component used for this. There was no way that these machines could be used for any useful use. Yes, we know there are other OS'es that can run on those PC's besides Windows, but they didn't run Mac OS, so that was good enough for us.
We did even donated some working PC's to a hospital. So don't blame us for having some fun with old cases. Btw, IBM's cases were the strongest! And all mess was cleared.

The only reason I brought up SETI@home is because it was the first successful, wide-scale implementation of a distributed computing client that conveniently runs as a screen saver. I think that, in itself, was quite significant. It paved the way for others to do the same with a more useful computing project behind it. (I will admit, the search for alien life using their methods seems pretty unlikely to pan out.)
I didn't even realize they did a Mac port of SETI, but obviously they did. I'm quite certain it wasn't available at the same time they first released the PC version, though. (They even has OS/2 ports of SETI after a long enough delay....)
Also, I fail to see how you can make your claim that running distributed computing clients is a task "the G4 does better and faster than any other processor"??
What are you benchmarking against? It's pretty much cold, hard fact that the latest P4 processors outperform anything in the G4 series. That's why Apple was considering the idea of possibly moving towards an Intel-based Mac someday. They have a CPU that won't scale as far, and doesn't perform as well as what Intel has.

Wired is very much a magazine concerned with a "hip, techno-savvy image" - and focuses in on the artistic and creative (even concerned enough with that to print itself on expensive glossy paper). This is quite often the crowd that aligns itself with the Mac, since the Mac is traditionally seen as an "artist-friendly" platform.
Furthermore, Slashdot tends to run stories that feature anything non-Windows in nature - so once again, you can count on a bit of a pro-Mac bias. (It ain't Linux, but OSX is closer than Windows, right?)
Therefore, no - I really have to assume some people think this type of get-together helps sell the Mac as the computer of a "hipper, more fun" crowd. Sorry, I'll pass on that....
