Due to inflation, the cost of making music has increased, therefore music that was made before inflation costs more.

More than half of the recent "inflation" is just price gouging [12news.com].

Yup, and the same people whining about that inflation will claim it's somehow President Biden's fault he's not interfering with the free markets and regulating prices.

Mind you, this is the same group of people who will say businesses can't raise wages because it will lead to inflation.

      • I bought some PVC pipe at Lowes. I went back the next day to get more. Overnight, the price went up by about $3. That is gouging. Also, take note of the fact that when an item goes on sale at the grocery store, they are sometimes getting a new, smaller size of the item at the same price to replace it.

You don't understand. Middle managing rent-seekers skimming profits are people too. Won't someone think of the useless people in the industry, their children are going to starve!

No no. You're mistaken my friend. The reason the price went up is that the cost of their profits went up. For example, it cost $0.11 to make $0.11, so they have to increase the price of their profits from $0.10 to $0.11.
    • We have a nice vicious cycle here. Inflation happens, which gets the Fed to jack up interest rates. Which causes people to cut services. Companies jack up rates to compensate, show they are having record profits, and the Fed jacks up interest rates some more.

Part of this is because subscription services are very inelastic. People are not going to give up their vehicle subscription for the heated seats of remote unlock carfob very easily. Businesses will continue to buy from Microsoft even if M365 goes

  • Am I the only one who finds it interesting that apple music costs a LOT more than apple tv? I wonder why??

Probably because Apple has to license the music from other music producers like Sony. Apple TV is mostly their own content. I'm sure that it was expensive to produce, but it's mostly a one-time production charge.

    • 1) Competition

      2) Usage (almost unlimited music library, the Apple TV library is pretty small, certainly much smaller than Netflix or Disney+)
    • Am I the only one who finds it interesting that apple music costs a LOT more than apple tv?

As the other response noted it's a lot about Apple having to pay licensing fees...

But also in terms of value, if you think about it Apple Music is giving you access to a really large amount of content compared to AppleTV.

      • Thanks, Im not in the apple eco system so I dont know what or what apple tv doesnt offer at this time.
        • Apple TV just has shows produced by Apple, some are really good but they do not have content from anyone else so they don't have a bigger range of stuff to watch like Hulu or Netflix do. Apple Music is a lot more generally useful da to day.

  • I always hear Apple fans bragging about how much money the company makes in profits. For them, this is great news since their profits are virtually guaranteed to go up!

We don't watch much of Apple TV (re-running Ted Lasso now being the exception), but its low price made it something that it wasn't a big deal to keep the subscription. With the increase I won't be renewing when it is up in the spring. AppleMusic was always just way too expensive for me to justify.

Where I live, Prime is worthless for shipping, and the music and TV offerings are likewise limited, so that might get the axe as well.

None of this really effects my budget in a meaningful way, but wasting money is wasting money.

This is actually a quite interesting comment given the state of the industry. Apple do offer a lot for little. Their pricing is the same as Spotify's, but for it you get quite a bit more (in terms of Hifi / Spatial music). You don't get much more in terms of streaming, sure Apple is integrated in Apple devices, but Spotify Connect is far more common.

The reason I find it interesting is because Spotify (according to a recent leak) is about to expand their offering to include things that Apple do, including be

      • Does anyone actually need Hifi / Spacial music? I dropped Spotify because it was compressed, but I'm not sure I can hear much difference between 16 / 44.1 vs 24 / 96. I know, technically, 44.1 khz was a really bad choice, but even with good speakers, I'm not sure there's much point in going above 48 khz.

Spacial music, I just don't get. I listen in stereo. I remember seeking out the quad version of DSoTM a long time back. When I finally found it, it was ok, but I preferred the stereo version. I keep
        • As a matter of interest, when you dropped Spotify due to compression were you able to hear compression artefacts or did you have some expectation bias creep in (note this happens to everyone). Spotify's free tier sounds horrible, but for Spotify Premium ... well try and test yourself when you have some time to see if that is at all relevant. http://abx.digitalfeed.net/spo... But as to the high res stuff, it's all marketing... now. It solved a very real problem in the early 90s largely due to aliasing and rec

          • The compression never bothered me, per se. I have noticed on both music and movies, deep bass notes seem muddy on compressed sources, especially through good speakers. I also had the impression that stereo imaging wasn't quite right. It may have been bias and imagination, but that, combined with losing Neil Young's music got me to switch. I've been using Amazon lately and my PC is able to output 24/192 while my TV does 16/48. I really don't hear the difference. Amazon includes everything for one price

The sad part is Apple TV does have some nice programs on it. For All Mankind being one example. Fortunately, there are other ways to get good content.

      /me adjusts his eye patch.

  • So of course they need to raise their prices!
