Apple Begins Pulling Creepy, Unlicensed Disney and Nickelodeon Games from App Store (inputmag.com) 28

Laura June, reporting for Input: Two days after Input reported that there were hundreds of unofficial -- often disturbing -- knock-off Disney and Nickelodeon gaming apps aimed at children in Apple's App Store, the company has begun removing the apps from the store. Some of the games found had been available for longer than a year. It remains unclear -- partially due to the way App Store guidelines are written -- on exactly how many fronts the apps in question violated Apple's policies, though many of the titles at least infringed on the IP of the characters they portrayed. It's also unclear if the apps were removed because Disney and other companies filed complaints, or if Apple removed them on its own. As of this afternoon, it seems nearly all of the apps mentioned by name in the initial report were no longer available in the App Store.

        I know the ones mentioned just bored me as a child. As an adult, I'm a little disturbed by Beauty and the Beast. Beastiality right there in the title.

  • I had an app rejected because of 32x32px screenshots of album covers. I contested it by saying it was fair use (and by the fact this particular app validated something like 6 times with these exact screenshots) but I ended up changing screenshots.

    For a long time there was some idiotic push to advertise how great your platforms app store was based on the total number of apps that could be found in it, but Sturgeon [wikipedia.org] tells us that the vast majority of it is just going to be crap.       If you actually read those stories and histories, it should be fairly obvious that Disney took a LOT of liberties with their retellings, leaving them nowhere close to the originals. The result in each of those cases is a character that is most certainly of Disney's creation and protectable under law.
