Apple, Anthropic Team Up To Build AI-Powered 'Vibe-Coding' Platform (bloomberg.com) 16

An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple is teaming up with startup Anthropic on a new "vibe-coding" software platform that will use AI to write, edit and test code on behalf of programmers.

The system is a new version of Xcode, Apple's programming software, that will integrate Anthropic's Claude Sonnet model, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Apple will roll out the software internally and hasn't yet decided whether to launch it publicly, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the initiative hasn't been announced.

The work shows how Apple is using AI to improve its internal workflow, aiming to speed up and modernize product development. The approach is similar to one used by companies such as Windsurf and Cursor maker Anysphere, which offer advanced AI coding assistants popular with software developers.

    Just kill me now.
    • Dude, coding your personal vibe is a ton of fun. Here's one open source project to help you do it. There are a bunch of other frameworks and the like too: https://vibhub.io/ [vibhub.io]

Give it a try and make your life worth living again.

      Enjoy.

Vibe Coding, from the makers of Aura Carpentry and Chakra HVAC.
  • Seems like vibe coding is like an ultra-high level programming language these days.

Of course, all jokes aside, I wonder how this will go. I've had AI coded functions work perfectly with little to no debugging. I have also had AI coded stuff that took more time to debug than if I just wrote the thing by hand. Maybe things will get better, but AI has not yet replaced hand-tuned assembly, otherwise optimizing compilers would be doing all work in the embedded space (not embedded as in Raspberry Pis, but embe

  • Oh great, another newbie buzz-term that will be seen everywhere now.
  • This will not succeed because of being based on Xcode. Currently if I wanted to use AI assisted coding I could switch with zero friction between Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Firebase Studio, and a few others because all of them are based on VS Code and when I switch I can bring over all of my settings and most extensions. But this thing is based on Xcode so if I wanted to try it there would be a learning curve. Also based on my experience talking to many devs, Xcode is not exactly the most loved IDE out there

  • What we need of course is a greater abundance of even more shittily coded shovel-ware iPhone apps helmed by developers without the skills to understand how to fix any bugs!
  • Disclosure: not a professional coder here (although I code a lot for scientific data analysis).

Hear me out: I totally get that "vibe coding" can (and should) be a scary proposition for professional coders. Not talking job security, I am talking code quality and code reliability. You know better that I ever will why this is generally a bad idea.

But: for most people on this planet, computers are an appliance. And the entry threshold to writing useful code is pretty high. Now, I would assume that even with pe

  • Vibe coding is the most cringe
    • How fickle and arbitrary is cringe? Was Turing once so cringe, they forced steroids on him? If cringe is your only objection, does that say more about you than about "vibe coding"?

It is much harder to find a job than to keep one.
