Apple Wants You To Know It's Working On AI (reuters.com) 47

Apple plans to disclose more about its plans to put generative AI to use later this year, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said during the company's annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday. From a report: Cook said that the iPhone maker sees "incredible breakthrough potential for generative AI, which is why we're currently investing significantly in this area. We believe that will unlock transformative opportunities for users when it comes to productivity, problem solving and more."

Apple has been slower in rolling out generative AI, which can generate human-like responses to written prompts, than rivals such as Microsoftand Alphabet's Google, which are weaving them into products. On Wednesday, Cook argued that AI is already at work behind the scenes in Apple's products but said there would be more news on explicit AI features later this year. Bloomberg previously reported Apple plans to use AI to improve the ability to search through data stored on Apple devices. "Every Mac that is powered by Apple silicon is an extraordinarily capable AI machine. In fact, there's no better computer for AI on the market today," Cook said.

      Incorect.

Instead, it will be equally as useless as chatGPT has always been.

Lmao, ChatGPT can offer infinitely more than Siri ever could, and will still be better than anything Apple develops. Because Apple is bad at developing everything that they can't just buy outright.

        • Way to not get the point!

Siri and chatGPT are unrelated if that helps you in any way understand what I wrote - being an Apple Hater, and being unable to think of anything except how much you hate Apple, it probably will not.

          • All Hail apple!!
          • Chatgpt can at least say things that are believable at some level. Siri is just a total moron, and always has been. The reason you think siri is intelligent is because years of huffing the battery fumes coming out of your bent iphones has made you even more dumb.

If you believe that, you might as well believe Microsoft is going to also release a new version of Cortana complete with holographic projection and powered by their partnership with OpenAI. ...actually, that sounds significantly more believable.

Do you have any evidence to the Contrary?

Apple knows Siri sucks. They have stated that it is barely extensible, and the Dev. Team has spaghetti-coded and stretched Siri just about as far as it can go, and a Complete Rewrite is the Only Cure.

Of course, in typical internet fashion, I can't find the article I saw about a year ago about this. I think it was in MacRumors; but I am not sure at this moment. But the gist of the Article was as I described.

                  • or in typical you fashhion it was all a big pro-apple lie

Even if they DID do a complete rewrite, it will still be ass. Apple doesn't have good software developers.

                      Of course not.

That's why Apple is coming up on a half-Century of Success, which has it Currently being (depending on the day) the Top, or within pissing-distance of the Top, Valuation in the World of any Business. And all based on Products that are Powered by, or are the sole Result of, the efforts of Apple's Software Developers.

Because they have bad Software Developers.

                      Makes sense to me!

You can call me a troll if you want, but IMHO AI simply doesn't meet up to the product standards that Apple desires in its products.

They want the sleekness of an iPhone in an AI, and it certainly isn't there yet.

You're not far off the mark there. AI hallucinations are very real. Giving people bad information is morally and ethically wrong - and criminally wrong if they act on it in a way that hurts them or others. The amount of work and testing required to ensure that responses given to real questions are accurate is quite large. Making sure information sources used in training are accurate is also critical - using Wikipedia as an information source comes with risks for example. Apple could easily push out an LLM f
    • They also want products that offer them a high profit margin, and AI certainly isn't there yet.

  • 2011-ish and she's still just as useless now as ever. If they had really been serious about AI they would have been making regular updates, but instead just let it flounder this whole time. I'm assuming they'll just add some LLM features on to it, which will make Siri even more unreliable, since she'll hallucinate half the shit she tells you.
