No New iPad Models from Apple in 2023, a First Since the iPad's Debut 31

Apple broke from its 12-year tradition of annual iPad updates, releasing no new models in 2023 - a first since the product line debuted in 2010 when it rapidly became the tablet market leader. The last launch was in October 2022, with the only 2023 iPad-related release being a USB-C Apple Pencil.

I too struggle remembering what year it is, but not that badly.

    • What am I missing? There were no new iPad models last year, last year was 2023.

The headline: "No New iPad Models from Apple in 2013...". The current headline has been edited since the original frontpage post from 9:30 UTC. A lot of news sources make a point to write the article has been edited, when, and why.

You missed the editors doing a wonderful job again. It originally said 2013 :-)

  • I mess up the date sometimes too. But usually by just one year.
    • It is still jyst one incorrect caracter in that string, the 2 in 23 changed to a 1, ie a simple rypo no biggie, byr I must admit to reading the title a few times and checking if I hadn't come a cross a slashdot archive

I mean, I finally got used to every time Apple releases some new gimmick it being paraded out and heralded like the next best thing since sliced bread, even if it's nothing that hasn't been done before, and often times better, but now we also get to hear when they do not release a new product?

    • Did you look at the linked article? The very first comment there was by Apple Knowledge Navigator (sounds like an AI construct to me) and read

I don’t think anyone’s missing out. The lineup is messy, but the hardware is so good that there’s little incentive to get an Android tablet.

In the unlikely event that the poster is a real person and not just a construct, that is about the most fanboi-ish comment I've seen for decades.

Their AI was trained using SuperKendall comments on /.
You know the iPad is a premier tool for professional photographers, don't you? SuperKendall is one, he should know. That is, when he's not saving Fortune 100 companies with his IT emacs skills.

      • There really isn't. I hate apple's marketing and lock down as much as everyone else. But ipads have always been great at their limited use cases. And android based tablets have been terrible. I haven't used all Androids, so maybe there were a few good ones I missed. but the pixel 7 was great before it suddenly stopped working. Same with the Samsung I replaced it with, then the LG. Meanwhile my less techy significant other bought an ipad, and it worked fine for years before the support stopped. I spent proba

Don't you remember the ads... Tablets heralded the "post PC world"... Seems tablets are the market that is declining.

I say that as someone who bought a tablet last year, it's sole job is to play movies on aeroplanes. If it breaks I'm probably not going to replace it even with another £99 tablet.

Actually waiting for prices on replacement screens to come down on a 10" iPad Pro right now for this exact purpose. Not buying a new tablet that only gets used while traveling. My bet is that the battery is probably 100% dead right now from being dusty and disused since I haven't traveled anywhere with it in 6 months or so...

When will Apple do the same for its Macs and iPhones? :P

How can the poor Apple addicts get their fix now? They needs their new shinies! Won't someone please think of the poor, uninformed Apple user here?

On the contrary, I think they are pretty happy since they still have latest and greatest and don't have to spend any money to keep up.

    • Don't worry, iPhones with marginal improvements and dubious "user experience enhancements" are just around the corner. Until then, feel free to buy more of the current model with a less rugged design so it's easier to break and buy more iPhones!

    • Oh, its coming the vision pro at the end of January. Plenty of money to waste there on a first gen product, with questionable utility.

I think I might be tempted to get a gen 3 version once the kinks are worked out and the price is under 1k.

    I hate to say it.

I love the iPad, but it's not priced competitively with Apple's own overpriced under-spec'd Macbook Air.

It would make for sense for Apple to make the iPad "the" budget device, because right now the only reason you'd buy the ipad over the macbook is the touch screen/apple pencil. Because guess what! Artists have been using the iPad as a CHEAPER alternative to Wacom Cintiq's.

Apple needs to determine or more likely let rest of us know what the strategy actually is. A lot of 'uncertainty' is probably deliberate so they don't get left with inventory.

Clearly the high-end iPads and low end Macbooks occupy really the same space in terms of price point, both on the consumer and producer site. That hardware isnt really even that different.

Everything about what they have done to MacOS in recent years screams they moving toward convergence with iOS but... they can't really pull the tri

      • As soon as the EU mandates side-loading, you'll see macOS and iOS finally coming together. The Macbook Air really should just be an iPad Pro with a detachable keyboard at this point.

  • I'm still using my 2019 model 12.9" Pro. I was expecting to upgrade in 2023 but if they broke from tradition I guess they are preparing some significant changes. In 2024 regardless of what the changes may be, I'll get a new one as the 2019 model is becoming sluggish in performance.
    • but if they broke from tradition I guess they are preparing some significant changes.

Or, they were completely unable to prepare any significant value offering that would compel a product release.

Don't assume that an absence of a product launch means a bigger product launch is coming - that means you've completely ignored or cancelled out ineptitude and total lack of innovations as possibilities, which are quite possible.

  • That way they can have a new feature to get people to pay for.

  • Sweet. Next stop is no new I-phone.

  • Perhaps converting to USB-C was so intense for them they didn't have time to incubate new features or updates

  • I think Apple held off on releasing new iPads because of the resources being tied up with developing the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset.

But that the Vision Pro is pretty much done, I expect Apple to do the following:

    1. Release new iPad Pro models with OLED displays on both the 11-inch and 13-inch models.
    2. Release a new iPad mini and iPad Air models, with the iPad Air getting a 12.9" display as an option.
    3. Upgrade the SoC on the iPad Pros to M3 and the other other iPad models to M2.
