Apple's next big product launch is nearly here. The company just sent invitations for an event on September 12th at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, where the company is expected to announce the iPhone 15 lineup and new Apple Watches. The Verge: The iPhone 15 lineup will probably be the star of the show. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to look a lot like the iPhone 14 but with a couple of key differences. The notch at the top of the screen will apparently be replaced by the Dynamic Island that first appeared in the iPhone 14 Pro lineup. The Lightning port might also be replaced by a USB-C port, which could enable faster charging.

Does Google prohibit carriers from installing third party and carrier apps that can't be easily uninstalled on the Pixel? Last time I checked, you had to buy directly from Google to get that experience.

Since Pixel 1, USB-C has been standard. And the Pixel bootloaders are unlocked, making alternative OSs like LineageOS [lineageos.org] possible.
Lightning existed before USB-C was even Ratified.

I only upgrade when the latest number is more than twice as much as the current iPhone I have, time to upgrade to iPhone 8 I guess! I paid $100 for my last iPhone and it still receives updates and works perfectly well with battery at 87% original capacity. LOL!
I am glad they release new ones although and I am especially glad people buy the new ones as well. Poor apple needs to make money somehow!

I am still using my 8+, which a friend gave me for free. I gave my roomate my 6+ (which I bought brand new), which is still going strong.
In fact, my 4S; which was the phone I bought new before the 6+, would still work as an iPod Touch if I bothered to drag it out and charge it up.

It's become a trust-your-enemy-device issue every time you try and plug the thing directly into a computer, and wired charging is that shit Boomers used to have to do. Agreed, Apple should have transitioned to USB-C back in 2016, rather than let an additional seven years of waste accumulated, plus who knows how many duplicate cables were created simply because someone at Apple had to have a different connector on one end. I for one am stunned Apple waited this long.

I replaced my SE 1st generation last week. The battery would not hold a charge consistently under 25% otherwise I would have kept using it as it was the last iPhone with a separate headphone jack. It would not update to iOS16 but it still got security updates for iOS15.
Oh give it a rest and tape a Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter to your precious tethered headphones and give it a rest!

And in my very long experience with the 3.5mm (1/8") audio jack for audio applications, they fail the "adequately performs" metric by exhibiting a fairly high degree of maddeningly-intermittent operation, especially as the jack gets used and abused for awhile. . .

I'm very much with Woz [mashable.com] on this one. The hardware and software is still outstanding, but their concentration on making their goods fashion items diminishes their appeal for me.

Yes, they are solid products. I don't use them personally, but I have a friend who does, and has done so for a long time. They deliver the "just works" promise they give. And as long as you stay in the (walled) Apple garden, you have near perfect compatibility... as long as you stay up to date with your Apple products, of course...

But other than that, iPhones already do everything most people want, and have done so for years. Same as with Android (which all already have USB-C). Sure your new processors may be amazing tech, but the older processors are already overkill in a phone.
Just please don't spend an hour+ of this announcement touting some new pretend "innovation" like Memoji. If you want to show us something magical, how about a magical price drop?

I refuse to use anything biometric on a phone....at worst, the law (or criminals that have you) could compel you to use your finger or face to open your phone for them.

Use the Passcode/Passphrase option. Afterall, you only have something like 48 alphanumeric characters (and maybe symbols) maximum. . .

What I would really like is to disable the biometrics for unlocking the phone but keep them for unlocking apps. Somehow apps can still be weird interacting with the password management but work fine interfacing with the biometrics management

I sold my old iPhone 8 to someone who missed the fingerprint, and then almost immediately had seller's remorse. FaceID sucks, and I miss the Home button.

I don't. My fingerprints are basically gone - a mix of dry skin, eczema and harsh chemicals has pretty much rid most of my fingers of fingerprints. I can unlock a fingerprint sensor with one of my fingers, but that's it. And that finger is on my non-dominant hand so I have to actually deliberately put the finger on the sensor as the sensor doesn't line up with the finger.
Face ID works far more reliablly for me, the only time it has problems is when I'm wearing a mask. I did have to program with my face with

What do they mean by that?
It appears they mean a notification area that can contain discrete app controls like play/pause/skip for an audio stream for example.
Is this any different than what other mobile devices have? Is there a reason it's only possible on newer iPhone models, or do they intend on standardizing on this interface?

The dynamic island is a rectangular slot on the face where the sensor suite lies that has no screen pixels. Apple, magically turned an ugly cutout into a 'feature' by using it as a region where the surrounding pixels change to indicate different functions.
