Apple Makes Developer Betas Free To Download and Install (9to5mac.com) 8

Apple has made the Apple Developer Program available for anyone with an Apple ID. Previously, the company limited developer betas to developers who have a paid account that costs $99 per year. MacRumors reports: "OS beta releases" is now listed as an available resource even for those who are not members of the Apple Developer Program. This change means that anyone with an Apple ID can download and install the iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma betas without waiting for the public betas to launch.

Of course, it is not a good idea to install these betas on a main device as there can be notable bugs and issues with early software. More information can be found on Apple's membership page.

I'd like to call it a "correction," but since the previous (wrong) story isn't acknowledged in the summary, I doubt /. is even aware.

give those poor editors a break, its being a batshit crazy week with about half a dozen apple adverts every single day ...

I'm an iOS dev and don't install betas on main devices until about a month before release (good practice previously to await until a bit after the public beta has been used for a while!).

Even beta 1, I generally do not install unless there is something I want to try very badly, but it's easy to get some nasty device breaking issues. Not like full hard reset issues usually, but things that can br

    • Install the beta on a used device? Apple introduce significant bugs often enough that it's usually best to wait for the .2 release before updating.

      • Install the beta on a used device?

Yes, I meant to add that bit of info to the second part of my message but forgot! I meant to say, even for a second used device I wait until Beta 2 and then install, unless there is some new thing I absolutely must use a device to test and I really need it.

  • Fuck the betas I don't want to run Apple's glitchy shit on my devices. I would definitely like to run MY OWN GLITCHY SHIT without paying $99/year for the right. Does this mean I can develop iOS apps and run them on my phone for free?

I think I looked into it once and I could like test apps for 30 days or some bullshit. It's not really clear if this has changed by looking at their website either.

    • Yeah, last I read, each person needs to resign and reinstall the app. Last I heard it was one or two weeks.

An authority is a person who can tell you more about something than you really care to know.
