Some 2023 MacBooks are set to be made in Vietnam, as Apple continues its push to reduce its dependence on China as a manufacturing base. 9to5Mac reports: MacBook production could begin in Vietnam as early as May, says a new report. The piece doesn't specify whether the plan refers to the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or both -- but the move would hit an important milestone in Apple's diversification plans.

Nikkei reports on the latest move: "Apple has tapped its top supplier, Taiwan's Foxconn, to start making MacBooks in the Southeast Asian nation as early as around May, sources briefed on the matter said. Apple has been working to add production sites outside of China for all of its major product lines, but doing so for the final one, the MacBook, has taken longer due to the complex supply chain needed for making laptop computers." iPads, AirPods, and some Apple Watch models are already made in Vietnam. "Beginning MacBook production in Vietnam would mean that -- for the first time -- every flagship Apple product would have a second manufacturing base, outside of China," notes the report.

China is a geopolitical adversary of America. Vietnam is a geopolitical ally of America.

Vietnam has less than a tenth of China's population and less than a twentieth of China's GDP.

Vietnam threatens none of its neighbors. Its only territorial dispute is with China.

China has nukes pointed at America and is building many more. Vietnam does not.

Not quite true. Done of the islands are contested between Vietnam, China and the Philippines. But it's China who broke the status quo of not developing them.

But I very much doubt any of that influenced Apple's decision. More to do a little with wages, but particularly free trade agreements so they can avoid import tariffs.

I'm a long time PC user, a veteran you might say. This move could win my heart and mind, but it seems like a potential mine field. How much flashback memory will be installed? Will there be advisors to support us, at least at first? I'm afraid if I get in to such a system, it might be difficult to get out, maybe even an unwinnable situation.

The Chinese workers are getting too uppity so they are switching to a less developed 3rd world location where they can shit on the people even more. Of course the "spin" is they are reducing reliance on China and helping bring prosperity to Vietnam.

Vietnam is more aligned with the US than China (even if socially/governmentally its more similar to China).. but its really more about a second source for work, and lets be honest..

In most democratic countries, the cost of living (and wages) are high... making the manufacturing of goods in those countries high (and to varying degrees maybe equal if not higher than domestic manufacturing).. vs. in most Communist (or communist-lite or communist-aligned) countries.. the cost of living (and by extension the wag

A true globalist looks at the workers in China and the workers in Vietnam and thinks "the workers in China are paid way too much". China used to have an advantage due to its slave labour camps, but word has gotten out that those slave labour camps exist so it's not viable from a marketing perspective for companies like Apple to take advantage of it anymore. Also, China could face harder sanctions from the US, so that's one more reason for Apple to leave.
