Apple has restored Russian social network VKontatke and webmail provider Mail.Ru to the App Store, three weeks after removing them both for sanctions violations. From a report: The two services, home-grown versions of Facebook and Gmail with domestic market share to match, were removed from Apple's platforms in late September, following a wave of British sanctions that targeted the financial organisations that own them. At the time of removal, Apple had said it was complying with the sanctions issued by the UK government.

Except that VKontatke was built from the ground up to be a Facebook clone specifically for Slavic audiences. So it's very much appropriate to call it "Russia's Facebook".

According to Wikipedia, Mail.ru was founded in 1998, while Gmail launched in 2004, so saying the former is a home-grown version of the later is totally incorrect. Still, it may be correct to call Mail.ru a home grown alternative to Yahoo Mail (which dates from 1997).

Russia is indiscriminately killing Ukrainian civilians. Time for Apple to, for once, do the right thing and drop everything to do with Russia. Apple shouldn't need a government order to know right from wrong.

Russia needs to sort itself out and remove its dictator/elites
Curbing forms of communication for the general populace will probably slow that process down.
