Apple Will Release macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 on October 24 (arstechnica.com) 19

The next versions of macOS and iPadOS will be released to the general public on October 24, Apple announced today. From a report: The iPadOS 16 update runs on all iPad Pros, the 5th-generation iPad and later, the fifth-generation iPad mini and later, and the 3rd-generation iPad Air and later, dropping support for the venerable iPad Air 2 and a handful of other models (it will also ship on all the new iPads Apple announced today). The macOS Ventura update generally requires a Mac released in 2017 or later, dropping support for various models released between 2013 and 2016. Both updates will enable some iOS 16 features on iPads and Macs, including editing and deletion of iMessages, better search in Mail, passkey support in Safari, and a new large-screened Weather app and redesigned Home app, improved gamepad support, and more. Both also include a version of the Stage Manager window management feature, and Ventura includes a redesigned System Settings app.

As I depend on my Drobo 8D & unfortunately I have yet to see a >5 disk Thunderbolt 3 connected enclosure available to replace it so no Ventura for my home Macmini.

    • Maybe a NAS using gigabit ethernet would work? I would suggest looking into TrueNAS. It's easy and relatively cheap to build your own and they're pretty reliable. Plus it might let you move the server away from your work area reducing waste heat and noise right next to you.

      • I would recommend that setup. I have a TrueNAS w/ RAID in the basement and serve up NFS / TimeMachine / etc. Gigabit is fast enough for most operations in my case (perhaps not a FinalCut scratch disk).

Going from 20Gbps Thunderbolt 3 to 1 Gbps is too much of a step down, IxSystems doesn't sell the TrueNas Mini X+ outside the US & I haven't found a naked enclosure that I can install TrueNas Core on that is sold here in France.

I do agree that TrueNas is the direction I'd like to go if only I could.

TrueNas Core seems like the direction I'll want to be going in but Gigabit Ethernet would be a very big, unacceptable step downward from the Thunderbolt 3 connection I have with the Drobo 8D.

https://www.truenas.com/truena... [truenas.com] shows the TrueNAS Mini X+ & TrueNAS Mini XL+ to be mostly what I want in a replacement for the 8D because they have dual 10Gb ethernet but they seem to be massively overspecced CPU/RAM wise for my needs. Yes, I want speedy disk access but there won't be dozens of simultaneous users.

        • No worries. The prebuilt ones you're looking at are really nothing special in terms of hardware (in fact the XL has a lousy case IMO) and are built out of commodity parts. It's easy to build your own server to suit your taste, and the software is free. The only unusual things are that it likes as much ECC RAM as you can give it, and you'll want either a lot of SATA ports on the motherboard or else on an HBA card with appropriate firmware. You don't really need a fancy enclosure either -- a generic case wit

Thanks for your advice, they bring back memories of the /. of yore.

It's been decades since I've built up a computer for myself but I'll look into your suggested sources.

Too bad Apple doesn't have an official iSCSI initiator & development on https://github.com/iscsi-osx/i... [github.com] seems to have stalled.

    • Don't worry, the issue will take care of itself soon (when your Drobo dies). That's been happening a lot lately. And with Drobo bankrupt, there will never be another software update.

I'm dealing with quite a bit of this. If you need directly connected storage, OWC is the way to go. They've got an 8-drive box that should take care of your problem:

I've mostly been replacing them with Synology NAS boxes for my clients. I'll feel a lot better when the last Drobo is gone, tho

I've taken to backing up all content to a 16Tb disk daily. If it dies, it dies, but I have taken some precautions.

I'd prefer moving to a FreeNas 10Gbps solution but IxSystems doesn't sell to France & I haven't found a >5 drive 10Gb ethernet enclosure available here to install FreeNas Core to so an OWC (which does sell here) will be my solution if the 8D dies before that pans out.

I'll just avoid upgrading that MacMini till the 8D dies or I find a Freenas solution I can buy here.

        Thanks for your comment

    What?

    • Ventura's memoji are up to 1.5x faster, the amount of caricature they contain has increased by 2x, and color saturation has more than doubled. The new method to manage your open applications requires 3x more clicks than Mission Control, and the amount of useless Apple applications that cannot be uninstalled has increased by 50%. In addition, it now comes with a timer that tells you when to go to bed.
      That's what.

I guess I don't have to worry about my failing butterfly keyboard any more. Apple took my 2016 MacBook out of support and I have to pay another $1200 premium to be able to develop again. So much for Apple laptops having a longer life then the rest. I can develop for Android on my 14 year old Thinkpad T400 if I need to.
    • Have had pretty much the same experience. Have owned 4, and they each failed in an expensive way. The last one has the screen cable and keyboard problems, but it still works with external KVM. It's the last one I will buy. The M1 mini I bought for me, and the Studio at work are pretty damn awesome though.
      • I guess I can play Kodi on the mini, provided it will connect to a normal HDMI TV... It is able to connect to a TV right? it will be an expensive replacement for my Firestick. But all I use Apple devices for normally is development. Everything else I have is linux.
  • Doesn't have X feeture ;]
