Developers of apps released in Apple's South Korean App Store no longer have to use the company's own in-app payment system, the iPhone maker has announced in a developer update. Instead, developers will be able to take payments using the third-party service providers pre-approved by Apple. From a report: The change comes in response to an amendment to South Korea's Telecommunications Business Act passed last year, which prevents large platform holders like Apple and Google from forcing developers to use their first-party in-app payment systems. Both Apple and Google opposed the legislation, with Apple arguing that it would make it harder for its users to manage their purchases, undermine their privacy protections, and put them at risk of fraud.

Don't forget Apple charges $99 a year for a developer account, so they have collected more than $2 billion from developers every year before a single app is sold. And they will almost certainly bury any app using the entitlement in the App Store listings, so they can charge those developers for ads to improve their app's visibility. Side-loading is really the only way to make the playing field right again..

Oh yes, those. I actually forgot all about those, honest!
Quite frankly, I just mentally filter them out, because they nicely announce themselves as "Ad", have a blue background, and are always the first Result in a Search.
But I guess they work pretty well, with a reported average conversion rate of 50%, which is frankly astounding for any advertising.
By the way, I don't think Apple helps themselves to this Result rejiggering for their own Apps.

Actually, I don't really like any of it; but paid-for Promoting of Search Results, as long as "Ads" are clearly marked as such, and so long as they are only based-on an actual top-level Search Request, and so long as no identifiable information flows backward, I guess that is of sufficient benefit to the User to allow it.

If they are that smart they could be helping a lot of companies save billions of dollars and should stop wasting time commenting on Slashdot.

I'm sure you've just never looked at the numbers, but Apple collects more money in the yearly $100 developers fees than Netflix spends on all technology in a year [ciodive.com] . So you can choose to believe either Apple is really terrible at content delivery, or they are screwing developers.

The problem is one of curation. The gold rush and the app wars of the 2010's are over. No one is competing over the number of apps in their respective stores anymore. (Why that was ever a thing is beyond me.) Perhaps it's time stores stopped just blindly accepting every submission that wasn't obviously malicious.

Right but that's a cost of selling the iPhone which would be nothing without it, which is why they provide all of that to apps that charge nothing for free. The *only* thing they charge for is they payment processing, the rest of it is a necessity to make the iPhone a viable product because they don't allow any alternative which is why if you don't require payment processing then all that comes for free because Apple needs developers' apps on their app store.

Each generation has its challenges.
