Apple has finally discontinued the 27-inch iMac. Minutes after Apple's Peek Performance event wrapped, the last of the Intel iMacs disappeared from its online store.

The Apple refurb store (Score:2)
There are (and likely will continue to be, for some time) 27" iMacs available on the Apple refurb store [apple.com]. Most of the time that's a better place to buy Macs anyway.

I think this gives the desktop lineup some really nice, clear delineations that didn't exist before.
Mac mini, iMac 24": Consumer products. Very good for most general work!
Mac Studio: Professional product. Great for work that takes more horsepower.
Mac Pro (eventually): Top of the line. Configure to your heart's content. Upgradeable, meant for only the heaviest workloads.
The lineup was sort of muddled before; I like this direction.

The 27" has 20% more screen area. It is a significant difference if you do actual office work on the machine.

Don't wonder at all why they got rid of it. They most certainly know what their sales numbers look like by model. If they got rid of it, it's likely because the 27" made up a very small percentage of the overall iMac sales volume and didn't justify the continued investment in offering such a model.
You're talking about a company that defines an "upgrade" as offering the new model in Rose Gold color.
And given their obvious profit margins on every model, the only thing you've confirmed is the mystery surrounding "continued investment", since that required a can of fucking spray paint to create the Spring 2022 release.

If you're looking to argue reasonable costs with someone, you've already lost inside of an Apple store.
And given that every UI looks like it was designed for a 4-year old, I'm gonna accurately go with your latter deduction. Users are in fact, that dumb. There's a reason they make all-in-ones.

Yeah, that means they have too much money. This isn't hard. If you have excess money you don't have to care if you make a technically bad purchase, because you can follow it up with another one next time. People without too much money don't have that luxury. This is why the rich are so commonly dumbfucks, they are insulated from their bad decisions.

Anyone who does significant office work will have 2 or 3 monitors, which in Mac OS is supported very well.
Seeing it that way makes it very easy to see why a 27-inch all-in-one is not really necessary. I can't image choosing that (20% more!) over a solution that gives me 2-3x that and probably costs less.

I've tried working with multiple monitors, and it sucks. Sure, it works for lots of people, but it doesn't work for me. I'll take one large screen over multiple small ones any day of the week. The 27" was so perfect for me, when my first one grew old, I bought a new one. I'd have bought my third one probably early next year or later this year. Now - honestly don't know.

They are, though. I continue to see old 24" iMacs in use in shops as POS systems and reception computers. They're great for really general office work.
Frankly, I'm not sure why you're so contentious about this considering that Apple's best selling machines are their Pro-level LAPTOPS. If you can get by doing work of any kind on a 15" monitor, certainly it's possible to get similar work done on a 24" monitor sitting at a desk. No, BOTH displays are overkill for general work. These aren't your chumpy 1080 monitors, they're 4.5k and 5k resolution with a glass panel, aluminum frame, no plastic. The 27" is 5120 x 2880
It's $1000+ of 5k display (and speakers fwiw) that is not likely depreciate one single dollar anytime soon and looks brand new in twenty years, welded to $1000+ of PC that's worth peanuts in a few years.
A plastic 4.0k 24" standalone display is overkill for most PC work. Glass & aluminum 4.5k 24" is a whole other l

Not in Canada. I'm still seeing the 8GB and 16GB options for RAM as well as 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB SSD options.
I had hoped to see lower Mac mini prices today, alas it was not to be.

I think they added it on the M1 Mini last May (2021). It was also an option on the Intel Mac Mini, but Apple dropped that option when they switched to the M1. I guess enough people complained that they decided to make it an option again.

Apparently I did too - just checked and you're right - they've crippled the mini again, probably to make us blow money on the studio version. Sigh.
Separate Monitor / Mini (Score:3)
You get essentially the same thing with the new 27" display and a Mac Mini. The new display includes sound and cameras, so with it plugged into a Mac Mini, the only difference is the extra small box on your desk. Plus you have the advantage of upgrading the computer later on when the monitor is still working perfectly. And if you want more power, there's now the Stretch Mini or whatever they're calling it.

Having an iMac has dramatically reduced the clutter and cabling on my desk, it's even easy to move it around, and it's a brilliant form factor. Plus it is a TON cheaper than buying them seperately.

Having it be cheaper was a flaw in Apple's opinion, which is why they eliminated it. Apple doesn't want to compete on volume, they want to compete on profit per unit. And it's working well for them frankly, so it's hard to critique this strategy.
As for reducing clutter, though, it's generally easy enough to attach a small computer to the back of a monitor, under your desktop, or to the wall behind the monitor. Any of these solutions reduces desktop clutter so frankly that's a non-problem so long as you're w

Have you seen those brackets and attachments? It's the most ugly crap ever. My desk stands in the middle of the room, and I'd like to be able to look at the backside of my computer without feeling like I live in the garage.

Steve let a lot of suboptimal shit happen on his watch. Still seems to me like the under-desk mounting strategy could be pretty effective at taming the clutter.
