Apple Reportedly Hires Away Meta's AR Public Relations Head (theverge.com) 19

Apple has reportedly hired Andrea Schubert, Meta's communications and public relations lead for its augmented reality (AR) products, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter. The Verge reports: Schubert's LinkedIn page indicates that she's been working for Meta for nearly six years. "Meta, with Oculus, has been the market leader in headsets, so such a hire makes sense as Apple nears its launch," Gurman explains. On both Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year, Meta's Oculus Quest 2 was one of the top-selling products. Not to mention that Meta's Oculus app topped the App Store in the US on Christmas Day, and became the number one free app on the Google Play store today, a potential sign that a significant amount of people received the headset as a gift this holiday. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company's AR headset could launch sometime in 2022, featuring 8K displays and "Mac-level" computing power. It may also cost a whopping $3,000 and be geared largely for developers at launch.

  • Neither choice is very appealing, but when it comes down to it, I'd prefer to be in Apple's walled garden rather than be Zuck's bitch. Any other good VR options out there?
    • In the consumer space, the only other companies worth mentioning are HTC with the Vive and Valve with their Index. Valve has a functional ecosystem too in the form of Steam, I'm not sure what HTC has in that area.

HTC is a generic peripheral, it doesn't work with a specific ecosystem. You can use a Vive with Steam and most VR games on Steam support Vive and dozens of other headsets. This is unlike Oculus (Meta/Facebook) which only works with Oculus (Meta/Facebook) headsets (I believe Steam works with them as well).

So the Valve Index is really a competitor for the HTC Vive and such since the games work on both.

        • I have an original oculus, not the quest. It does work with steam games, though some games don't properly support the controllers.

Apparently FriendFace is not part of the Apple-Microsoft-Google poaching agreement. I hear employees are leaving Meta in disgust. Fortunately, their skills in privacy exploitation are highly marketable.

Anti-poaching agreements are far weaker than you may think.

They only prevent you from being directly recruited by a company under the agreement. They do not stop you from approaching the company instead on your own free will. (Since many agreements are private and secret, there is no way for an employee to kn

"Meta" is short for "Metastasize", which is an apt description.

It's like like two monkeys squabbling over a pile of poop. What next, they are going to hire a chief blockchain NFT specialist?

Apple used to innovate and set industry trends, not join buzzword bingo.

    • Still, you have to admit that the marketing department of 'Meta' is the most competent part of what they've built so far.

      • Meta

Given the number of jokes in relation to metastasised tumors, the blocking of Instagram users called "meta" and the fact that there are already companies called Meta which are now in a trademark dispute with Zuckerberg, I'll reserve my judgement.

Or maybe you were saying that as a reflection of just how horrible the other departments are, in which case I tip my hat to you :-)

So far they are the only ones who've done anything.

  • That's just so meta of Meta, but afterall, the metadata shows that this is the 'new meta'.

... you try an AR headset for an hour non-stop before you buy one. The novelty wears off quickly and you might find you get nauseous using them. After 15 minutes you notice the brick stuck to your head. I have no idea why these companies think this is the next big thing. Ugh.

Considering one of the biggest complaints about 3D movies and 3D TVs was the glasses, it seems silly that people would rapidly adopt a VR headset as an alternative, as they're heavier and more bulky than 3D glasses.

      So people who hate 3D

      • People hated the glasses because it causes them to get dizzy. Most companies chose to use a cheap solution for 3D which was more likely to cause headaches and other issues. Like the Nintendo 3ds.

VR seems to be a lot less likely to cause these issues, but then the pricetag shows that they arent typically using the cheapest solution.
      • The 3D glasses use a left/right alternating on/off LCD shield to show your right eye one picture and your left eye the other. This flickering is horrible (IMO) and why so many don't like the technology. VR glasses show your left and right eye two independent images from different perspectives just like in real life. Much, much better (again IMO) but it's the bulky head gear that is the show stopper here. VR won't be viable until they are completely wireless and become the size and weight of a standard pair

No spitting on the Bus! Thank you, The Mgt.
