Trump Justice Department Subpoenaed Apple for Data From House Intelligence Committee Democrats (cnn.com) 101

Prosecutors in the Trump administration Justice Department subpoenaed Apple for data from the accounts of House Intelligence Committee Democrats -- including Chairman Adam Schiff -- along with their staff and family members as part of a leak investigation, an Intelligence Committee official and a source familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN. From a report: Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, another Democrat on the committee, told CNN's Don Lemon on Thursday evening that he was notified that his data had been seized as part of the probe as well. The prosecutors, the New York Times first reported, were looking for the sources behind news stories about contacts between Russia and Trump associates. The leak hunt began with the FBI sending a subpoena to Apple in February 2018, which included a gag order, seeking metadata on more than 100 accounts as part of an investigation into the disclosure of classified information, the person familiar with the matter said.

The gag order was renewed three times before it expired this year and Apple notified the customers. The House Intelligence Committee determined that along with members of the panel and staff, the dragnet collected the records of family members, including at least one minor, the person said. Records seized included those from staff members who had nothing to do with issues related to Russia or former FBI Director James Comey, including Schiff's personal office staff, a House Intelligence Committee source told CNN. Democratic committee leadership is relying on self-reporting to know who has been impacted at this point -- both members and staff, the source said. Swalwell confirmed to CNN that records of family members and a minor had been obtained.

    • The focus of outage regarding this should not be on the impropriety of the potential motivation, but in the fact that this was possible under the current burden of proof requirements. If it's wrong to be able to do this to a representative then it's wrong to do this to any American.

      A secondary focus, maybe.

But an Administration spying on elected opposition politicians should definitely remain the primary focus.

He was digging for dirt that he could turn into something like what Hillary Clinton's emails became. From leaked conversations with Rudy Giuliani we know they were pressuring Ukraine for investigation into Joe Biden's son so they could spin that into another email like scandal. So time and time again Trump abused his power to attack his opponents.

It's not that we don't all know this. Question is does America love Trump so much that they're okay with this? From what I can tell about 45% of voters do. So in other words they're willing to trade democracy for Trump. And I guess like Trump said, what do you got to lose? Of course after you've lost it it's too late to find out....

Maybe it's not that Americans love trump as much as hate the opposition. Seems to me for a number of elections now the winner is the least hated overall, not the most beloved. How is it the best a party can do to combat this perceived existential threat of Trump is a Hillary and a Joe, seems rather pathetic?

When you poll Americans they overwhelmingly agree with what Joe Biden is doing, as long as they don't know it's Joe Biden doing it. This is why you had Republicans campaigning on passing the $1,400 stimulus package that they voted against.

What's happened is these people are consuming media from only one source, specifically Fox News or oan or Newsmax. This is giving them a distorted view of the world. This is also how you get people who are vehemently opposed to Obamacare but love the affordable Care act.

This is that post truth society academics like to talk about. And it's really bad news for all of us except a handful of oligarchs.

Want pathetic? Both Chelsea Clinton and George P. Bush (Jeb's hellspawn) are getting into politics. I wouldn't be surprised to see yet another Clinton/Bush election in the future. [barf]

    • Not to be the whatabout guy, but whatabout when Holder subpoenaed journalists' phone records. This feels a little different than that but not too much.
  • I wonder why they didn't just publish what they found the way Adam Schiff did?

Schiff was among those voting in support of H.R. 6172, which extended the PATRIOT Act until 2023.

Seems a bit hypocritical for him to now be sobbing about having his data snooped. What's the matter - I thought only terrorists were the ones with stuff to hide? Maybe you shouldn't have been on the train to normalize warrantless surveillance in the first place, bud.

On the one hand, you're right. On the other hand, I think Congress does have reason to believe that the act won't be misused in such a foolishly-partisan way, if for no other reason than the shoe will soon be on the other foot. Schiff clearly failed to comprehend the depth of the stupidity, recklessness and shortsightedness of the Trump administration.

No. The opposite. Congress know full well that it will be abused and misused. US administrations are very willing to break the fucking law, you can bet they'll take every opportunity they can that the law actually permits.

For the last two years of President Trump's tenure in office, the House Intelligence Committee was leaking privileged information to the newspapers steadily. It seems entirely reasonable that the Justice Dept would investigate to discover the source of the leaks. Those guys took an oath and the leakers broke it, along with breaking the law.
