Apple's First AR Headset To Launch In Q2 of 2022 (macrumors.com) 21

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to debut its first augmented reality headset in the second quarter of 2022. MacRumors reports: The research report focuses on prospects for key Apple supplier Genius Electronic Optical, and notes that the company will benefit from a number of upcoming VR and AR products from the likes of Facebook, Sony, and Apple: "We predict that Apple will launch AR HMD [head-mounted display] devices in 2Q22. The device will provide a video see-through AR experience, so the lens is also needed, and Genius is also a key supplier." Apple has been rumored to be working on a pair of AR-related headsets, led by an initial "mixed-reality" device that has variously been rumored to be launching in 2021 or 2022. A sleeker pair of augmented reality glasses is rumored to follow, perhaps around 2025. As recently as January, Kuo was predicting that Apple's initial AR headset would debut sometime in 2021, but by March he had pushed his prediction back to "mid-2022," more in line with today's report.

Some of the uncertainty about timing may be related to a potentially lengthy gap between announcement and launch for the AR headset. As a new platform for Apple, the company may want to announce it a number of months ahead of any product launch to give developers time to prepare. Reports have, however, indicated that Apple's first AR headset will be a pricey, high-end device largely targeted at developers rather than the broader public.

  • Oh seriously? Who is falling for this crap? Most of these Apple rumors are nearly always paid for by investors looking to pump and dump the stock for some quick cash.
    The scam is like this:

    1. Buy Apple stock
    2. Pay an analyst to say Apple is going to produce some already rumored/speculated product that may or may not be true. Justify it to self by saying Apple may even take the idea.
    3. Watch the stock rise in price
    4. Sell the stock
    5. As memory of rumor fades, stock will drop in value.
    6. Repeat cycle.

    • Actually this specific analyst has a very high success ratio of predictions since several years. He must have leaking sources deep in the procurement chain. If you are juggling stocks as a job, his input is worthwhile.
      • No links to facts, so this comment is actually just:

Please believe me, I need the money.

        • Google him. He has a very high hit ratio of predictions.
          • Link to your facts.

            • Sure, because doing a 10 second google is toi much asked of you apparently, just one of the results. Below rates his success rate as 76.2%, another tracker at 75%. This is why people working in the stock market pay attention to his notes.

So if someone you rely on for financial advice is only lying a quarter of the time, you consider that a good adviser ?
                Bzzzt.

                • Just be gracious and admit that there is a reason why people pay attention to this analyst. His job is actually to make research notes for the stock market professionals, and indeed he does not have perfect insight in Apple’s deeply guarded supply chain, but being correct 3/4 of the time, which is more than anyone else, gives him some credibility.
                  • Good one, yes of COURSE people must follow the 75% man, you can't lose more 75% of the time, you're I mean he's fantastic at being completely correct quite often. You're I mean he's a TRUE master of the art of spreading sometimes true rumours about stuff.

  • Apple has invented the Google Glass.

  • I hope it's insanely expensive so when people see me with it they'll know how fucking awesome I am.
  • I guess now we can now expect regular exciting Slashdot stories about all the companies that are not going to help Apple manufacture this device ?

  • I think noone can deny that AR and VR will be our future. AR headsets will become commonplace and we can do nothing about it. There're already toys for dogs: high-tech AR headsets.
