Airbnb Hires Jony Ive To Design Next-Gen Products and Services (appleinsider.com) 42
Online vacation rental giant Airbnb on Wednesday said it has hired former Apple CDO Jony Ive and his company LoveFrom to assist in the design of future products and services. AppleInsider reports: Announced in a blog post from Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky, Ive will work on next-generation "products and services" as a design consultant. It appears that he will report directly to Chesky, or collaborate on design initiatives with the CEO, throughout what is described as a "multi-year relationship." "Jony will also help us continue to develop our internal design team, which he believes to be one of the world's best," Chesky writes. "I know he is particularly excited about a relationship that will evolve to become a deep collaboration with our creative team."

Ive helped flesh out Airbnb's logo in 2014, while Chesky wrote Ive's biography for Time magazine's top 100 most influential people in 2015. The design process can be applied to many things. In this case, it's far more about managing creative talent, building a creative team, and recognizing good ideas than actually grabbing a sketch pad and pencil. Services, brands, products both physical and not, processes, and web experiences are all things that designers shape.

Like almost all designers Jonny Ives' work is completely unremarkable, and no-one else will employ him for what he thinks he's worth.
I think it's a nice thing to do for a friend though.

Airbnb still wants to do an IPO. That is the main way that everyone involved in it will get fabulously rich. Unfortunately, the Airbnb market has cratered due to the coronavirus, so they need to juice the company's value more. Throwing some money at Ives (arguably the most well known designer in the world) is just a useful way to make the company appear cool and progressive. What the hell? Why doesn't a company that makes physical products hire him? Airbnb is a waste of his talent. I'd like to see what he could do when it comes to designing an automobile interior for example. Granted he might get rid of the seats an put a minimalist floor mat instead.

I would think that there would be a market for some airbnb hardware, door locks, cameras, wireless, etc. airbnb could help control when people use your house and even track different usage patterns. Owners get the stuff cheap, airbnb mines another source of data.
But in reality they would just use rebadged existing hardware.
