Apple Announces Sept. 15 Event Where It's Expected To Reveal New iPhones (cnbc.com) 50

Apple just announced a digital-only event on Sept. 15 where it's expected to reveal its newest iPhones. Apple typically unveils its new iPhones during an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. in September, but this year it will host it online-only due to the ongoing spread of the coronavirus. From a report: It's possible Apple also announces the Apple Watch Series 6, a refresh to its iPad Air and other products at the event. The event starts at 10 a.m. PT. Apple didn't provide any additional details but will likely stream it online, as it usually does. Apple is expected to announce four new iPhones this year, including two "regular" iPhone 12 models and two iPhone 12 Pro models with new designs that include sharper edges around the corners. For reference, the new design will be similar to 2010's iPhone 4, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Screen sizes include a 5.4-inch model, two with 6.1-inch screens and a big model with a 6.7-inch display, according to Kuo, who also said that Apple won't include headphones or a charger in the box.

  • Boy, I hope the rumour mill has nailed this, because that 5.4" phone is exactly what I've wanted for years. I won't buy it this year (I've still got another solid 2 years in this XR), but I just want good, small phones to EXIST.

The sooner they announce the watch the better, though, because I've already got my money saved up for one. I just need them to announce it so I can order it.

    • If you want an iPhone with a small display, get yourself an iPhone SE 2020, their display is even smaller at 4.7".

      • I didn't say I wanted a small display, I want a small PHONE. The footprint of the 2020 SE is bigger than the rumoured iPhone 12 5.4".

I have an Android that is 3" x 3.5", and yet has a 6.75" screen. It's nice to get a phone from a company that innovates to make things better like Samsung, not a company that makes their phones worse and calls it innovation.

  • Apple never included headphones with any iPhone. You meant earbuds.

  • With the only exception of the Foldable displays (which are still very expensive, and don't seem to offer much benefit yet) I haven't seen much innovation in the smartphone market. Just the normal improvements in CPU and Battery. The last major upgrade in my opinion was the OLED display, with no power black, allowing for always on displays. But that was rather minor, in which Apple also seemed to had backed off from, just because they were more expensive to produce.

  • 'Battery sold separately'

    Now that would something noteworthy.

Actually, the rumors coming from the journalists with the most reliable sources indicate that this September event is likely just for the iPad and Watch lines. The iPhone line has been dealing with delays and is expected to get a separate announcement in October.

While it's not a sure thing (after all, they're still rumors at the end of the day), don't bank on buying a new iPhone later this month if that's the product you're keen to get.

    • I came here to post the same thing but happily you did this much earlier... as Gruber of Daring Fireball pointed out, the tagline for the event is "Time Flies"! Pretty obviously, no new phones yet, but they will talk about IOS 14 being released.

I couldn't get very excited about this iPhone launch anyway. The big new feature is 5G, and there is still no 5G coverage in my area. T-Mobile is getting close (but not here yet), Verizon's closest 5G area is in New York City, and AT&T's 5G is fake.

So, yeah... I can wait until next year for a new phone.

  • Surely they will at least say something about their upcoming ARM-based Macs?

    • Why would you think that? How often have you seen Apple discuss computers at the September/October event rather than stick to iPhone/iPad/AppleTV and entertainment content/software?

It would be exceptional if they *did* discuss desktop or laptop computers this early rather than later in the year.

  • That while Kuo and CNBC like to trumpet about Kuo's supposed 76% accuracy rate on Apple predictions, it neglects the fact that his correct predictions are always the things that everyone gets right/pretty close and his incorrect ones are the more controversial things that make good click-bait, like the new models not including earbuds/chargers.

And maybe that's what they do, but I also think getting all up in arms about it until it's known for sure is pointless.

  • I'm so glad someone told us that they'll be telling us something. Now I know that I'll know it. In the future. When it happens.

Wait ... this counts as news?

  • I miss the days when Apple/Jobs announced new and interesting things. Mac OS X, the first iMac, iPhone, iPad, etc.

Who knows what they'll announce on Sept. 15 - but if it's just iPhones with better specs, I'll be pretty disappointed.

  • Seriously? Apple Fan Bois are now getting excited about a reveal about WHEN Apple will reveal their new iPhones?!??
