Responding to Coronavirus, Apple Closes All Apple Stores Outside China (apple.com) 29

Willy English writes: Apple will be temporarily closing its stores outside Greater China until March 27 but its online stores will still be open.

In a tweet, CEO Tim Cook said that "we must do all we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19...." He added that the iPhone-maker will also be committing $15 million to help with the recovery. [Apple is also matching employee donations two-to-one to support COVID-19 response efforts locally, nationally and internationally.]

All of Apple's stores in China were set to open after the outbreak forced a prolonged closure of its retail locations. The U.S. technology giant has 42 stores in China and while all have opened their doors, some are operating on limited hours. [CNBC noted that they opened "with limited operating hours."]

Indeed, in the fall, we'll get COVID-20 with a lot of new features.

I’m waiting until COVID-20.1 comes out, the initial release is always too buggy for my taste.

Apple also reopened stores in China after a month. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/1... [cnbc.com]

    But lets keep panicking.

  • China, despite the reported decrease in cases, is hardly entirely safe at this point.

I have to wonder how much of this is driven by political and economic submission to China and their desired international perceptions, rather than the well-being of Apple employees.

    • Nowhere on Earth is "entirely safe" even if the Covid virus didn't exist. I know. Shocking. I'm not sure what people are expecting here.

      • Personally, I'm expecting them to open or close based on objective comparison of risk to other countries.

Since they are closing in all other countries, they are saying that China poses less risk than -every other country-.

This is blatantly a political statement rather than a realistic view of the situation, to me.

        • China is at less risk than other countries. Their outbreak curve is flattening already, along with the rest of Asia. Soon it will start declining.

          • You've refuted yourself with "along with the rest of Asia".

          • Many businesses were directed to re-open to get economy moving again. Not sure Apple among those urged to reopen. Of course if staff Ill or quarantine then businesses not required to operate. Factories with many workers with homes in Wuhan , Heibei could not return after CNY holidays due to quarantine. Those are passing China seems to be getting back into swing.

You realize Taiwan is included in "Greater China" too, don't you?

    • If that career isn’t working out or paying well, I think you have the desire and skills to make a killing in the niche adult film industry.
  • Credit to True Stories (1986)...

Stores with sales areas were only opened about two weeks ago, and with larger storefronts, single exit/entry checking for fever (a detection compromised by asymptomatic transmission, but not abandoned) and monitored for crowding. Everyone still wears masks.

Where will I go when I want to be gaslighted about the problem with my MacBook display or keyboard?

And where do I go to get my iPhone fixed when it shuts off at 20% battery, to be told it isn’t a problem, while I watch the girl with the low cut top get her phone which she broke by dropping get it replaced for free?

Where else can I get treatment like this?

  • So, right now we have millions of people depending on their iPhones and Macbooks while they are working from home, and Apple (in their infinite wisdom) decides to close their repair facilities for those devices for the next two weeks.

Yeah, that's not going to cause any problems.

    • I agree. We decided to accelerate new laptop purchases to help employees working from home, and I have two MacBooks that have problems new out of the box and scheduled an appointment to get them replaced within the return window so I could get a new replacement rather than a refurb unit. This sucks. We paid for new.

  • Unfortunately, the situation in the economy is not the best. But it's not just companies that will suffer. The crisis will affect ordinary citizens as well. If you have loans, read an article about debt relief https://debtquest.com/services... [debtquest.com]. Being deep in debt is a very stressful situation that can cause anxiety, depression and other health consequences. However, it is possible to reduce the debt.
  • My country closes all restaurants and pubs from midnight on.
    Even the Winchester Pub.
