Apple To Release 'iPhone SE 2' In Q1 2020 With iPhone 8 Design, A13 Processor (9to5mac.com) 33

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to launch the next version of the iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of 2020. "The new phone will be more affordable than the rest of the Apple iPhone lineup and feature newer internals, like an A13 processor with 3GB RAM, in a familiar iPhone 8 chassis," reports 9to5Mac. From the report: Kuo says that most of the new iPhone SE's hardware specification will mirror the iPhone 8. The analyst predicts Apple will sell 30-40 million units across 2020. The Q1 timeframe lines up with a previous report from Nikkei, which said to expect a cheaper iPhone with iPhone 8-esque design in the spring. This would mean it would feature a 4.7-inch LCD display and Touch ID home button. Kuo does not predict an exact price for the new phone. Before the 4-inch iPhone SE was discontinued, Apple sold it for $349 in a 32 GB storage configuration.

The current iPhone product range at Apple stores spans the iPhone 11 series, iPhone XR and the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The 4.7-inch iPhone 8 is currently on sale for $449 for 64 GB. Presumably, when the new SE launches, Apple will stop selling the iPhone 8 altogether. Given the current pricing of the 8, you could easily see how Apple could sell an iPhone SE 2 32 GB for around the same price as the old SE, in the $349-$399 range.

The distinguishing features of iPhone SE are:
    - smaller size - fits in one hand
    - has a 3.5mm plug

This is neither small nor has the connector. It's yet another rebranded iPhone 6/7/8. Ok then.

  • My first phone was an iPhone SE 32 I bought, even though they didn't advertise in US.

My second phone was a waterproof iPhone 8 64 I got because the first got soaked in rain.

I will buy the iPhone 11 SE2, because I don't want FaceID and I don't care about 3 cameras I just want what I want.

Kudos to Apple! You've got my next phone!

    • I don't want FaceID

Who want that? The reason they put face-ID is because there is no more home button (no more fingerprints), and there is no more home button to have the display take the whole space. At least they could have added a home button to the back of the phone (and fingerprint), like did most competitors. They didn't do that because Apple doesn't copy competitors (mostly). And now we have to bear with face-id.

      • Not with the iPhone SE2. Which is why I'm buying it for my next phone.

Pro tip: always skip iPhone generations, and always max out RAM for your storage/memory, cause this extends how long it will be useful. And if you do iPads, try to get them when they finally go on sale.

Based on the rumored specs, there is almost no reason to upgrade from the iPhone 8 to the SE2. It's nearly the same phone with a CPU bump, and the iPhone 8’s A11 is no slouch. I’d also be willing to bet that since 3D Touch has gotten the axe across Apple’s latest line-up, the feature will also be absent on the SE2.

This phone’s raison d'être is so Apple can keep selling the iPhone 8 series as a budget/prepaid model for a few more years, because they’re not quite ready for

I actually like the ecosystem but want a small phone that fits in my front pocket and just works, the SE is a perfect size phone. It fits the hand well, I can cover the whole screen with my hand and it just works. I'm using the headphone jack right now so I'm one of those people that Apple ignores on so many fronts.

I don't think that they realize that there is a group of people who just want a phone. Heck I'm willing to pay decent $$ for a 4" screen. But much like the keyboard on my Mac Book Pro I'm sure they will f*ck this up.

    • I don't think that they realize that there is a group of people who just want a phone.

I believe that they do realize that this market exists. If all you want is "just a phone" then why get upset if Apple doesn't sell one? Lot's of companies sell those.

This "just a phone" market is quite crowded, there's not much profit in it. Not only is this filled with Android devices but also second hand Apple devices. A new phone from Apple would have to offer something that Apple thinks that they can sell a lot of, tens of millions of them. This means something relatively unique. Integration with

every guy in my circle of friends has an iPhone SE. these people make 70-300k USD/year and would LOVE the new features

        - faster
        - more storage
        - water resistance

        Keep existing features
        - full app catalog

what we can't do is buy an iPhone that fits in your pocket or that you can use with one hand. I just don't understand their reticence to sell us a a fast, small iPhone. It's not even about the price. I'd pay 700-800 for one, but they don't offer us anything, so we keep the SE for the form factor.

The point of the SE was size. Enlarging it to iPhone 8 size undermines its utility.

4.7" is only a shade larger than the Sony Xperia Compacts (4.6") that fans want to be brought back, and those devices had decent sized top/bottom bezels and a small one on the left/right sides. If you increased the screen to body ratio you could easily get a 4.7" screen phone that is even shorter than the Sony and the same width.

  • people bought SE because of reasonable size for grownups ( as opposed to video obsessed infants out there) i went from iphone 7 to chinese androids .. then to iphone SE and love it .. there are many of us who want a phone that can fit the pocket .. has 4g .. can last battery full day & good build. I looked at the headline and was excited .. just to be disappointed when i read about the size. Just cant catch a break ...

The point of the SE, of course, was to re-use existing parts and production lines with a new phone -- it used a body similar to or identical to the 5 and 5S, while using a CPU (and presumably other internals) similar to the 6S, at that time only 6 months old. The fact that it catered to users who wanted a modern but small handset may have been a happy coincidence.

The iPhone 6/7/8 body is 15% wider and 12% taller than the 5/5S/SE. Here's my comparison diagram [dougburbidge.com] (look for the orange and yellow outlines).

The 8 has a glass back, where the 6 and 7 had metal backs. The non-metal back is of course necessary for wireless charging.

  • there are plenty of reasons to love the current iphone se
    - small size
    - small weight
    - seamless camera
    - still have an audio jack
    - the materials used to make it
    - no useless gizmos i dont care about, like faceid

if i want a better camera, i can use my canon camera
if i want i bigger handheld device, i can just use my ipad

    let phones just be phones

  • it's becoming like the Android world. I quite liked that there was a limited, but well-thought-out selection. Now it seems they just make a different phone for every fool and his dog.

I'm beginning to think that the genius has left Apple and they're just trying to keep the pieces together for as long as possible. It's a really, really sad thing. I'd rather burn my brains out with hot irons than return to the torture chamber that is the windows ecosystem, and I'll have to survive till 2070 or something to see
