Apple's Seattle Workforce Will Quintuple By 2024 (engadget.com) 67

Apple is planning on bringing 2,000 jobs to Seattle by 2024 -- twice the number it initially planned. Engadget reports: The new roles would focus on software and hardware and effectively multiply Apple's existing workforce by five. Currently, there are roughly 500 Apple employees in Seattle, focused mainly in its retail stores and machine learning hub. The expansion would also give Apple a significant presence in Washington State, right alongside competitors Amazon and Microsoft.

In order to accommodate the new workforce, Apple is leasing two 12-story buildings in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. The building's location will be at 333 Dexter, only one block west of Amazon's main campus. Apple and Amazon will be far from the only tech players in the neighborhood; both Google and Facebook have plans to expand in the vicinity.

No. The article states "is PLANNING to take on". There's no guarantee those plans will happen.

How much of this growth in the USA is at the cost of growth in China?

China has been stealing US tech and manufacturing for a long time. Things are getting tense with signs of China being more aggressive in their snooping around the USA. With or without tariffs I expect this flow of jobs that has historically been going to China will be flipping polarity.

    • Stealing? It's all a big circle really.

If you look at the 20th century, it was all about Europe losing jobs to the US because the US had so few labour laws and cheap workers... then that shifted to East Asia. Give it another 50 years and Asia will be complaining about Africa stealing all their jobs.

      • "Give it another 50 years and Asia will be complaining about Africa stealing all their jobs."

China's current leaders are not so corrupt and/or stupid to allow that to happen. What the future holds, no one knows.

Remember boys & girls: offshoring jobs is a PUBLIC POLICY DECISION, not some inscrutable magic caused by "duh fwee murket".

I suspect China will find it as impossible to stop the flow of jobs as Europe did to America and America did to Asia... but as you say, no one really knows.

But when it's tech and manufacturing that we're not making use of, is it still "stealing?"

    • The tarries are having the effect that a number of manufacturers are shifting some production from China, including Apple.

Apple has moved some manufacturing back in the U.S. but I'm not sure where that's at currently.

The China jobs were more about assembly, the Seattle jobs will be more about software and hardware design...

  • Good luck finding a parking space for your fossil fuel car, cause in Seattle we bike skateboard and take transit, and the only available parking spots are for plug-in electric vehicles.

Put that in your Apple Watch.

(caveat - I own various Apple computers and phones)

  • I'm sure this is going to pour gasoline on the housing price bonfire in Seattle. Current residents will be able to sell their homes at retirement and live like kings in 90% of the US.

Last I read, Seattle (area) was adding 1k new people per week (and has been for the last decade). Another 2k over four years is just part of all that and only matters because it's Apple building a new building downtown. Homes have been going up about 10% in value per year for more than two decades, and all the cheap fixer uppers or tear downs have long since been bought and flipped. Some people that have houses are even thinking of selling them now, moving to the peninsula and getting a new job there. Some
