Apple Launches Recall Program For Some MacBook Pros (betanews.com) 47

Apple on Thursday launched a voluntary recall and replacement program on Thursday for the 15-inch 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina Display, saying that batteries on some of these devices could overheat and "may pose a fire safety risk." From a report: The current generation is not impacted thankfully; if you have a 2016-2018 MacBook Pro you can breathe a sigh of relief. Actually, the only model covered by the recall is the "Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015." If you own that model, don't panic -- it is not all of them. To see if your computer has the faulty battery, you need to enter your serial number on Apple's website.

    Ripping of Samsung yet again.

      hahahahaha

  • That'll just keep your hands warm and toasty while you enjoy typing on the last decent laptop keyboard Apple ever made.

My S/N was in the range. They say:
    > Service may take 1-2 weeks.
And they still might find you didn't need a new battery after all.
Apple loves finding ways to keep professionals from pressing the buy button.
Guess it's time to switch from FCP to DaVinci Resolve.

I don't know if they gave you a loaner since it's a recall, but if not you could just buy a new one from the Apple Store and return it (within 14 days).

    • I'm in the same situation as you. My hope is that when I take it to the local repair center, they'll do some sort of verification of whether this particular model shows signs of needing the replacement, and if not, send me on my merry way. Otherwise, why not just let users mail in their own laptops?
  • You can basically typo anything and it will act like it's a legit number, but not one of the recalls. So like, don't put an "O" because it looks like they only use zeroes... not that the Apple website will warn you if you pick the wrong one though.

Don't type it, then. Double-click the serial number in the "About this Mac" dialogue box, copy it, then paste it into the form.

Of course you can simply copy/paste your serial number from the "About This Mac" dialog.

I can't - patch 10.14.5 destroyed the soft record of the serial number, and Apple won't do a thing to fix it.

My MBP's out of warranty, but Apple's nonchalance about the effects of their patch are still annoying.

Apple: Reasonably good software, on increasingly bad hardware.

Microsoft: Terrible and increasingly bad software, on reasonably good hardware.

    Computer industry: Not working.

    • Sounds like a case for Hackintosh

Why would you value Apple software so highly over Microsoft's? This isn't 1998 anymore, while Microsoft has dramatically improved their quality, Apple's has slowly degraded.

  • That sounds great.

  • Last month I replaced mine in my 2015 MBP via iFixit, took the blown battery and dropped it off at Home Depot. Fat lot of good this recall will do me, I don't think Apple will give me the $110 that the replacement cost, much less reimburse me the 90 minutes it too me to do the repair.

There was a question to iFixit in one of the forums regarding this battery, the poster was concerned that with this being a four year old laptop whether the batteries would be available long-term. The reply from the compan

Wow, how much are you using it? I hammer the crap out of mine and at 4 years old now on 752 charge cycle count it is still at 84.6% capacity according to coconutBattery.

      • Battery bulged massively. The bottom rocked when placed on a hard surface and the lid didnâ(TM)t close flush from the keyboard pushing up. Fortunately the metal didnâ(TM)t permanently deform: once the bottom cover was removed, all the tension from the bulge released, and after I replaced the battery all was well.

My Mac SN is in the "eligible" range. Should I worry? What happens exactly, you say "blown" battery? Any precursor sign before the battery is blown?

      • by wwphx ( 225607 )
If it's in the eligible range, you should contact them and get it taken care of, of course refreshing your Time Machine backup before [sending/dropping] it off. I don't know exactly what they're servicing as I haven't looked in to it yet. When my battery went, it tripled in thickness, causing the bottom to bulge so it would not sit flat on its four corner feet, but also pushing out the battery so the cover wouldn't close flush. But there were no symptoms prior to it happening, so I really don't know how
        • Ok thanks. Have the coconutBattery app that says the battery ois 92% healthy. And I'm always using the Mac power connected (since 2015). The temperature around the batteries (near the trackpad) is room-temp - hope that would give me some chance to be able to use the Mac a bit longer (?).
          • by wwphx ( 225607 )
I would recommend getting it serviced at the earliest possible opportunity, especially if you have another computer that you can use while it's unavailable. I realize not everyone has that freedom. They're talking specifically about the battery, and LIon battery fires are SCARY. There was a Mythbusters Jr. episode focused on Lion fires, and it took multiple extinguishers to put one out! The fact that it's reported as currently healthy is fine and dandy, but like they say in the ads about investment fund
