An anonymous reader writes Apple has announced that it sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, just three days after the launch on September 19. From the article: "Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company could have sold even more iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models if supplies had been available. Analysts had estimated first-weekend sales of up to 10 million iPhones, after Apple booked record pre-orders of 4 million on Sept. 12, the day pre-orders opened."

Not sure about other products, but here is the recent article about Samsung Galaxy S5.
Samsung sold 5 million Galaxy 5S phones in the entire month of May (which was evidently the first full month of sales)
The article says that it sold less in its first month than Apple sold iPhones 5S in the same month.

The iPhone is faster in artificial benchmarks but if you compare real world performance like opening apps or app switching it's slower. It was the same with the Nexus 5 and iPhone 5S.

If it's a video, you can see if he is going it correctly. With two factory resetted phones, pressing the on buttons at the same time and seeing which one boots first is not rocket science to do. Lab not needed. Same with launching a browser.

I'll admit that the camera on the new iPhone 6 is nicer, that the display looks slightly better, and that it responds slightly faster.
Is that enough to get me to spend $300 to upgrade? Nope. I'd just be exchanging one large screen 4G smartphone for a slightly newer one. My Samsung Galaxy S3 still has a lot of life left in it, especially considering that I can replace the battery if it goes bad or add additional storage if I run out.

That's generally true. Although the top-line Samsung models don't have a lot of competition, and it's legit to compare them to iPhones. But I'm not really trying to do that; I'm just pointing out that Samsung does not provide the numbers.

Sold? sold to whom? End users, retailers, wholesalers, importers or exporters. Hell, using that model you can count the same phone 5 times. The infamous sold out marketing scam is getting pretty old and lame, oh my god, buy it now, buy it before it's too late and you can never get one, buy it or be left behind etc.
If you don't wait 30 to 60 days to buy a new product, then you just become a tester for every one else and the manufacturer as the faults come to light.

It's important insofar as it speaks to who makes money and who doesn't in this competitive space. Apple selling 10 million phones over a weekend means that there's money to be made selling high-end phones to people, and that contrary to consistent commentary that Apple is doomed because their percentage share of the market is decreasing, they can still maintain a robust business based on absolute numbers of people willing to pay for their devices.

The Apple market are completely locked into one device, and are forced to wait twice as long on average to be able to upgrade. Therefore I would expect the numbers to be twice as large initially but dying off to a far smaller total than the Samsung devices.

Apple tends to release a new phone roughly once a year. In your list you left out the 3GS (June 2009), iPhone 4S (October 2011), 5C and 5S (September 2013).

Samsung does not sell phones directly to the end user. Their customers are the retailers (including the carriers), which take title and assume risk of loss for the phones. Any phones which are shipped into the channel count as a sale for Samsung.

Actually, Apple counts: Online orders when they are delivered to the customer, phones sold in Apple stores, and phones delivered to other stores. In this case, since everyone sold out the number of phones that Apple sold to non-Apple stores and the number these stores sold to end users are the same.

Apple NEVER has used sold it has always stated that it counts them as sold because if only ships what it know it will sell. Always has check its the investment part of its site. They never release actual sales figures like Apple does. They only speak in vague hand-wavy terms about the great success of each release. In fact, Apple is actually the only manufacturer of phones or tablets who releases actual sales figures. (Samsung has occasionally released "shipped" numbers sometime between stuffing the channel and starting to take the returns...)

1. The only phone that Google sells are Nexus's and they don't really sell in volume.
2. Google has said numerous times (including in front of congress) that they make more of their mobile revenue from iOS devices than Android.
3. Samsung's revenues and profits are declining because more high end buyers are buying iPhones and more low end buyers are buying Chinese phones.

Well it's hard to look at all the numbers together but if we take Samsung's S5 and Note 3 which would be somewhat equivalent to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The S5 was at 10 million in its first 25 days [gsmarena.com] and the Note 3 got 5 million sales in its first month [gadgetnote.com] so they don't seem to be that far behind and given that Samsung - while the most popular - is far from the only Android handset maker, comparing iOS to Android sales of new devices it would seem Android would probably win out.

That's not a terribly meaningful observation. Early adopters are always going to be the people most enthusiastic about the company, and in this case, that's far more likely to be people that already own iPhones.
I just got a new iPhone 6 myself because I've been using an iPhone 4 since release, and it was important to me to keep my device on the latest OS. That's not terribly remarkable.

Android works better on some phones than others. This is why a lot of people buy iPhones after having an Android phone. They bought a cheap shitty phone from some half ass manufacturer and then had nothing but trouble. Now they believe it's Android that's the problem when it's the phone's maker. That's a pretty naive view, sure you could get it at no cost when it is released as open source after the first handsets have shipped but for the ability to be competitive it is pretty much essential to be a paying member of the Open Handset Alliance which HTC, Sony, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Huawei, Asus, ZTE and many others are.

There are only a few decent Android phones and then there is the junk market which makes up the bulk. I've got a S2 and a Note 3 from Samsung and both are well made good phones. They don't have quite the style that the iPhone has but I like them and they have the one thing I wanted that Apple's products lack, an SD card slot. LOL, sorry, but no. The very original iPhone had some prestige factor to it, but they haven't been "fashion accessories" for a very long time. I am an Android user, but I will say the iPhone isn't beats. It's actually a decent piece of hardware and software. I don't particularaly like iOS and will stick to my Android, but it's also not horrible and a lot of people develop for it. I'm also glad we have both options, plus Windows Mobile too. More options are better for the market and people who write apps for only one OS are idiots.
It's still half of beats though. There are a lot of people who buy eyeProducts because of the marketing. I liked OSX 10.6, but everything since than has been shit. Final Cut X is god awful. There are pros and cons to everything.
