Apple Sells More Than 10 Million New iPhones In First 3 Days 206

An anonymous reader writes Apple has announced that it sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, just three days after the launch on September 19. From the article: "Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company could have sold even more iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models if supplies had been available. Analysts had estimated first-weekend sales of up to 10 million iPhones, after Apple booked record pre-orders of 4 million on Sept. 12, the day pre-orders opened."

How many phones does Samsung and Google sell every time there is a new Android phone?

Not sure about other products, but here is the recent article about Samsung Galaxy S5.
Samsung sold 5 million Galaxy 5S phones in the entire month of May (which was evidently the first full month of sales)
The article says that it sold less in its first month than Apple sold iPhones 5S in the same month.

There are more Android devices to choose from. Choice is good for consumers, but means that individual models can't hit Apple's numbers.

Who cares anyway? This is a bizarre pissing contest if ever I saw one. Millions of people watch reality TV, that doesn't make it good.

There are more Android devices to choose from. Choice is good for consumers, but means that individual models can't hit Apple's numbers.

That's generally true. Although the top-line Samsung models don't have a lot of competition, and it's legit to compare them to iPhones. But I'm not really trying to do that; I'm just pointing out that Samsung does not provide the numbers.

          • "There are more Android devices to choose from."

But there are also other iPhones to choose from. Apple still sells the 5s and 5c...

There are a lot of Android smartphones but not actually that many if you look at the models that sell in large numbers. Basically, there is Samsung.

          • by rtb61 ( 674572 )

Sold? sold to whom? End users, retailers, wholesalers, importers or exporters. Hell, using that model you can count the same phone 5 times. The infamous sold out marketing scam is getting pretty old and lame, oh my god, buy it now, buy it before it's too late and you can never get one, buy it or be left behind etc.

If you don't wait 30 to 60 days to buy a new product, then you just become a tester for every one else and the manufacturer as the faults come to light.

          • It's important insofar as it speaks to who makes money and who doesn't in this competitive space. Apple selling 10 million phones over a weekend means that there's money to be made selling high-end phones to people, and that contrary to consistent commentary that Apple is doomed because their percentage share of the market is decreasing, they can still maintain a robust business based on absolute numbers of people willing to pay for their devices.

Samsung is the only other player in mobile phones consistentl

To top that off, Apple always reports actual sales, whereas Samsung reports shipment to retailers, which may not necessarily count as sales - at least not in the sense of sales directly into customer hands.

I know there is always a "many Android phones vs one Apple" argument. But numbers are what they are.

There's also two Iphone 6's. If you're going to break it down, you should break it down.

However, the argument is usually Apple vs Google. In which case you can count both Iphone 6's vs a given generation of Android phones.

      • Not much of a difference from a Galaxy S3, S4, and S5. Big difference from an iPhone 4s or 5s to an iPhone 6 for those wanting a bigger screen.
    • by XaXXon ( 202882 )

I'm guessing its' tough to tell because it's not nearly such a big event. With your choice of a bazillion different models, each with some feature the others don't have, the amount of people excited about any particular one will be significantly lower.

Actually sold, or simply pushed into supply channels ?

Apple uses the actually sold numbers, Android used the hidden in the supply chain number.

      • Apple uses the actually sold numbers, Android used the hidden in the supply chain number.

Actually, Apple counts: Online orders when they are delivered to the customer, phones sold in Apple stores, and phones delivered to other stores. In this case, since everyone sold out the number of phones that Apple sold to non-Apple stores and the number these stores sold to end users are the same.

They never release actual sales figures like Apple does. They only speak in vague hand-wavy terms about the great success of each release. In fact, Apple is actually the only manufacturer of phones or tablets who releases actual sales figures. (Samsung has occasionally released "shipped" numbers sometime between stuffing the channel and starting to take the returns...)

      Well....

      1. The only phone that Google sells are Nexus's and they don't really sell in volume.

      2. Google has said numerous times (including in front of congress) that they make more of their mobile revenue from iOS devices than Android.

      3. Samsung's revenues and profits are declining because more high end buyers are buying iPhones and more low end buyers are buying Chinese phones.

How many phones does Samsung and Google sell every time there is a new Android phone?

Well it's hard to look at all the numbers together but if we take Samsung's S5 and Note 3 which would be somewhat equivalent to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The S5 was at 10 million in its first 25 days [gsmarena.com] and the Note 3 got 5 million sales in its first month [gadgetnote.com] so they don't seem to be that far behind and given that Samsung - while the most popular - is far from the only Android handset maker, comparing iOS to Android sales of new devices it would seem Android would probably win out.

    • Meh, if Apple fans are happy, that's fine with me.

I don't care, as long as my company doesn't force me to use an iPhone for more than email and calls.
  • by Anonymous Coward

Most of the new iPhones seem to be going to existing iPhone users. Trading in old phones after the contract expires brings in some new money for Apple without increasing market share.

    • by Uberbah ( 647458 )

Most Android phone sales would also be going to owners of existing Android phones, so WYP?

    • That's not a terribly meaningful observation. Early adopters are always going to be the people most enthusiastic about the company, and in this case, that's far more likely to be people that already own iPhones.

I just got a new iPhone 6 myself because I've been using an iPhone 4 since release, and it was important to me to keep my device on the latest OS. That's not terribly remarkable.

      • In the context of the quote "birth" isn't talking about childbirth. It's talking about the idea of inception as a classification (in this case, a "sucker").

        • by praxis ( 19962 )

English being my second language, I went to my dictionary with the hopes of learning something from your comment. Unfortunately, my dictionary only lists two entries for birth the verb:

          1. intr. To have birth, be born. rare.
          2. trans. To give birth to; to give rise to. Chiefly dial. and U.S. dial.

Do you mean give rise to?

Also, I don't find using words metaphorically to be "simple" English 101, or your 101 classes are rather advanced.
