JustZisGuy writes "Apple has released Carbon Sound Manager Update for OS X 10.2.2, available via the Software Update utility. According to Apple, the update 'improves reliability and performance of some applications that access Carbon Sound Manager.' Hopefully this will fix the audio cracks and pops found while recording in Carbon apps."

  • Can you refrain from publishing every software update? The Software Update utility will inform me of them.

    I don't mind important/critical updates being listed, but this one is just routine patching.

      Sure, perhaps the play-by-play may on the outside seem annoying, but really it is just an opener for a forum discussion. I like reading about people's experiences with the updates before I apply them. I suppose I am a nerd, and that would be news for me, thus preserving the /. mission. Otherwise they would have to drop news about BSD, Linux, etc. update annoucements too...

        Agreed. I like reading the discussion that ensues. Interestingly, I'm getting annoyed that every time a Mac OS X update gets posted on /. , somebody will whine about it, almost like clockwork.

        C'mon!!! Is it that hard to just not read a story you're not interested in? Get a life.

        • Agreed, while I wouldn't want /. to become a pure "there has been an update to {insert_whatever_package/app/etc}" site, the discussions can often prove useful. Well, that is when/if we can move on from this direction of discussion! It's important to know what the actual effects of various updates - particularly core OS ones - are, once they're in the wild. /. is certainly a better place to discuss the caveats of such updates than say.. versiontracker. That said, there's often plenty of ppl trolling about how it's a waste of time talking about Linux kernel revs too, c'est la vie!

      I like to hear about software updates here.

      The reason is this:

      A few updates ago, a certain iTunes updater wiped a heaps of people disks because of a rediculous bug in the install script.

      I read about this on Slashdot, and that's why I have automatic update turned off, and only check SU manually.

      That way other people can crash their machines before I do. :)

      And I know there isn't supposed to be any text here, but oh what the heck, I'm a n00b @ contributing to /.
      I'de like to add that I find the /. posts regarding updates useful since I like to save cycles and packets by not having auto update set and I don't have a good habit of regularly checking. Usually /. or my friend will tell me to do so.

  • I seem to be getting cracks and pops now during PLAYBACK in Carbon apps (iTunes). I also seem to have some quiet popping while nothing is happening and I'm just sitting in the Finder.

    Maybe I'm paranoid because of the update and I'm just noticing flaws in my MP3s that I'd missed before, but I could swear it's the same pattern of popping no matter what song is playing. I'll have to try a CD, I guess.

    Anyone else having a similar prob?
    • yep - since the update I have been getting faint 'white noise' coming out of my speakers, even when nothing is running except for the finder. Is there a way to uninstall the update and downgrade to the previous sound manager? btw I am on Pismo 500 g3 running 10.2.2 6F21
      • Also got them last night on my Pismo 400/10.2.2. Went away mysteriously though when I went to battery, and now gone after plugging back in at work. Seems to be related to the cleanness of the power supply?
  • If we use Mac OS X, the OS itself automatically informs us that the update is available.

    If we don't use Mac OS X, we're probably not interested.

    What is the intended audience for a story like this?

    Presumably...people who have Mac OS X, have the Software Update feature completely turned off, never read Macintouch or MacFixit, but do read Slashdot regularly.

    That's probably not a null set, but still...
  • Apple has a Knowledge Base Article [apple.com] about this update, but it don't have much information at this point.

  • Issues with Audiophile 2496 Card (Score:5, Interesting)

    There's been a report at xlr8yourmac [xlr8yourmac.com] of a major incompatibility with these cards. Here's the quote:
    I just installed the Carbon Sound Manager Update and when I reboot was unable to produce sound via my M-Audio Audiophile 2496. I was initially hoping this would fix some minor glitches that OS 10.2 re-introduced to the Audiophile. To my dismay, it cut sound entirely. I've already tried using the analog out as well to make sure it didn't break the SPDIF out only. I tried reinstalling the drivers as well with little luck. As of right now, I'm unaware of any way to remove the update. I'll test my other Jag install just to confirm that this indeed is isolated to the Carbon Sound Manager.
    • The Audiophile range are pretty much the best pro-sumer sound cards. Low latency, kick-ass converters. I am extremely happy with the one I'm running.

      Hope you get lucky with the patch.

      Try M-audio's helpline - my experience is fast & good response.

  • I'm running software update, but I don't see it. I don't remember installing it.... anyone else having problems picking this update up?
    • ...that includes it - but it has not fixed the audio problems I'm having with Logic 5.5 on OS X 10.2.2 (flat-panel iMac, USB M-Audio Quattro.)

      The Cubase discussion boards mention a similar problem with Cubase SX - a metallic, staticky, robot-reverb sound that gradually starts a few minutes into a recording session. It seems to hit people with USB interfaces. Anyone else have this problem? Or better yet, a fix?
