Here is what I have been able to find so far:

According to this message, posted on alt.os.linux.slackware, Patrick Volkerding is now at the Mayo clinic, in the state of Wisconsin (this makes sense since he was in North Dakota with his parents).

This clinic and its college of medecine are very famous as one of the best center in the USA for the treatment of viral and/or rare diseases. More information on the Mayo Clinic at Wikipedia.
