Apple is known for limiting the number of different products. IMHO Apple is unlikely to ship a "microconsole" and continue to ship the Apple TV.

Much more likely: the "4th generation" Apple TV, which will not only do everything an Apple TV does, but will also play games if you buy a controller.

According to Wikipedia, the current Apple TV uses a single-core ARM chip. For gaming, Apple should put in a more powerful chip, which may imply a price hike. Perhaps Apple will continue to sell the current generation as a less-expensive model, for those who don't care about games.

      • I think iOS gaming is a real possibility on apple TV. Last year Apple opened up a framework for made-for-iphone bluetooth gamepads. they specified two layouts, the xbox 360 layout and the SNES layout. it's kind of silly to use these with an iPhone, but totally make sense to use them with apple tv. although from everything I hear there will be a new iOS 8 on Mon but no apple TV updates. I imagine it would happen in the fall, if it happens at all.

from what I've heard, the iOS 8 and OS X.10 are a lock, and ma
        • But since it's the WWDC keynote, wouldn't it make sense to say something about a future game-able AppleTV box, so that games are ready when it launches? Maybe limited availability for registered devs?

I don't see how the layouts are so silly. There are iPhone cases with buttons, and holding it horizontally makes the combination of phone and case look like an original GBA, PSP, or the bottom half of a Nintendo DS. The DS and PSP copy the Super NES's layout closely, and the GBA is the same thing minus two buttons. Other gamepads come as something to clamp onto the phone with the buttons at the bottom, which looks more like a GBA SP or NVIDIA SHIELD.

          • The controllers themselves are fine. I just think it's weird to hold a console controller and prop up your itty bitty phone on a table to play. Definitely not the console experience! Btdubs interesting stuff online about why the Mfi controllers are so expensive. One reason, in order to ensure controller quality apple specified that all manufacturers must source their buttons from just one source. Another reason is probably mad fees.

I don't know about Apple products, but many other devices (ex. Samsung Galaxy S4 & S5) support MHL (basically a micro HDMI connection). A cheap cable lets me plug it into my home reciever, and it works great for netflix, sharing pictures/video, Karaoke, or games (I've used it for Real Racing 3 on a 110" projector screen).

Add something like the chromecast, or intel's WiDi, and all that would be wireless, which certainly seems more in line with Apple's stuff. I have zero clue if anything like that is in t

              • With recent gen iPhones and iPads you can mirror the device to your screen with an appletv. So yes this is possible.

It would be unusual to release a games console with no release day games for it. Sure, you can have iPhone/iPad games on there, but the resolution will require scaling to fit a TV. They might still do it, but if a console were in the works I'd expect developers to know about it already.

    • by smash ( 1351 )
Yup. The appletv is crying out for a controller - there are millions of iOS developers who would love to break into the home console market. The hardware is capable enough, it just needs the relevant gaming APIs. The fact that apple have recently done the game-related kits for iOS IMHO strongly suggests that gaming is definitely going to be more of a focus in future. A controller enabled AppleTV makes sense.
      • there are millions of iOS developers who would love to break into the home console market.

Then why doesn't a small business that's been successful on Apple's App Store sign up as a PlayStation game developer? Sony Computer Entertainment has lately been courting indies in a way that would have been nigh unthinkable last generation.

Yes, because it does simplify stuff.

The minimum remotes is 2 - cable box and TV. But then there's all the other stuff - you have game consoles (PS3, Xbox360, PS4, Xbone), Blu-Ray players, Rokus, etc.

Rewording slightly, since we are talking about buyers of Apple products::

Apple could put in a more powerful chip, which may imply a price hike for those who don't care about overpaying.

      • Apple's most usual practice is to upgrade the processing power each year whilst keeping the price the same. Price changes usually come with different hardware form factors. And more often down than up.

      • The 3rd generation Apple TV has a more powerful chip than the 2nd generation model but the price didn't change. Since Apple uses the same Ax ARM CPU in almost all their iOS units, it's cheaper to just buy more of the same chip than to order half as much of two different chips.

I'm expecting the next AppleTV box to use the same A8 CPU as the current top-of-the-line iPhone/iPad. This could explain the delay in releasing the new box.

The mac mini is plenty for enterprise use, as is the MBA. The hardware is not the problem. It's the immaturity of enterprise management tools. No, macs don't need anywhere near as much IT management, but the enterprise will be slow to acknowledge that, and without proper enterprise management, they will not be readily accepted.
        • This is the one thing that makes me very sad at Apple.

Their business focuses mostly not on business. I would love to see them change that, and do business right. They'd pose a credible threat to microsoft and we'd all benefit from the additional choice.

you know how many customers were pissed when apple cancelled the Xserve? Both of them.

Apple sells hardware and builds software so people have a reason to buy the hardware. Considering that OS X server is free, I don't think they'll be inclined to let you run it in a vm.

But a story like this seems REALLY pointless. What on earth is the point of publishing the story days before we know for sure what will happen? Just so people can swagger in with last minute "guesses" that hardly count because of last minute leaks?

Much better to discuss the meaning or use of what actually is to come, rather than some possibility which will be potentially dissipated in mere days.

That's nothing. In previous years, Slashdot has quite happily published stories about Apple products while the presenters were still on stage announcing them. In short, it's not a technological barrier that Apple can easily solve, because it's a bureaucratic problem.

          • Apple's iTunes division could work around studio bureaucracy the same way Netflix did: vertical integration. Invest in a TV studio to produce original programming. Or what am I missing?

    From the article:

"Party Play allows four friends to connect via BlueTooth controllers to an iPad, enabling local splitscreen multiplayer. Take your iPad out to your flatscreen TV with a HDMI adaptor and bingo, the Apple microconsole has arrived."

So the iPad is the microconsole, and you can ALREADY DO THIS.

The iPad can mirror anything to a TV using HDMI, and the iPad can already do MFi controllers, so there is NOTHING NEW HERE.

  • Is "emerging space" a synonym for "didn't go anywhere?" As it stands, there is the Ouya, which is dying, a bunch of android consoles dying on the vine, and a Playstation Vita TV, which hasn't caught on enough in Japan to bother shipping elsewhere. As it stands, the only microconsole-like object that is doing OK is Chromecast, and that has nothing to do with games.
