iPhone 4S Has Been Jailbroken, Hack Enables Siri on iPhone 4 148

Diggester writes "Unless their chipset has already been exploited and jailbroken on a previous device, it takes a lot of time for the iOS jailbreaking community to jailbreak for a new iOS device. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of which are based on a still unexploited dual-core A5 chip, haven't received a jailbreak for iOS 5 yet. However, it appears they'll be getting one soon, as a certain eminent iPhone hacker has let us know that the iPhone 4S has jailbroken, and a jailbreak for the iPad 2 is in the works." In related news, Hackers have succeeded in bringing a limited port of Apple's new Siri voice assistant feature onto jailbroken versions of the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch.

    I'm confused. Are we supposed to complain about having to jailbreak the 4S or whine about how dumb Siri is?

    You shouldn't make these threads so complicated.

        I saw the same thing, checked what noscript was blocking and there were scripts from around 20 different domains. So it's either a pure advertisement troll, or an advertisement troll with a snippet of information buried somewhere in horrible web design. I'm not willing to dig around and find out.

  • Since there's not much of a technical reason the iPhone 4 cannot have Siri, I think a big part of why it's only on the 4s (and not even the iPad 2) is to help Apple understand server load from the service before it goes live for 100 million+ people.

    I am thinking early next year Siri will be rolled out to iPhone 4 and iPad 2 owners (it may be the 3Gs is too old to handle it properly, as some audio cleanup and compression is probably done on the phone before transmission). Possibly it would even be iOS5 wide

        I am sure that is also a component. But remember they still sell the iPhone 4 too. They don't care as much about upgrading as new users.

        • It is natural that a lot of people would be going hog wild over Siri at first, greatly overusing that service for a while until they settled down into what would become the typical usage patterns. By rolling it out more incrementally, Apple didn't need a massive amount of infrastructure for just a short period of time, and thus they won't be stuck with a massive amount of unused surplus server power that was only really needed for the initial release of iOS5 (if Siri had been enabled on iPhone 4 devices).

            • A rational explanation that justifies a tech giant being unable to rent some datacenter resources, instead opting for not providing a service to a certain class of customers, is not rational at all.

              If somebody came up with a variant, say: let's roll out the service for the new phones, so we have also time for proper deployment and customer assistance, and make vague promises for the older one: when most of potential switchers have upgraded to the new phone we sell a version who performs noticeably slower on

        I think considering that the iPad 2, which has a faster processor than the 4s doesn't have Siri, this is a very strong probability.

        I'm annoyed that I haven't found much in the app store that takes advantage of the new processor.

          I'd go much further. I'd say it's the only reason, and those postulating other reasons are deluding themselves. We're talking about Apple here. Style over substance. Fads over usefulness. Our way or the highway.

          ...but I suspect that the lack of a noise-cancelling microphone in the iPad 2 has more to do with it.

        I cannot imagine Apple ever considered the possibility that people would upgrade to a 4S from a 4. A 3GS, probably. A 3, most definitely. But definitely not a 4. No I do not have an iPhone. And, no, I know of no one who has even considered the possibility of upgrading their 1 year old phone so they can get Siri...

        Actually the grand parent is right, Apple knows the gimmick will fizzle out in short order (just like face time did) and there is no need to spend on new servers.

      Are you kidding? It's a big part of the product differentiation for the iPhone 4s. They just launched the iPhone 4s and made a big deal out of the new voice assistant, Siri. They want people to buy the iPhone 4s for the new voice assistant, Siri. And you're wondering if the reason that they only make the new voice assistant, Siri, available for the iPhone 4s, the phone you'll have to buy if you you want the new voice assistant, is because they want to understand server load???

          yes true, but if siri was enabled on a 4, then less people who already have a 4 would upgrade to a 4s.

      It's obviously to get people to buy the 4s.

      Apple does this CONSTANTLY - they leave features out of their early versions of things just so a year later they can release the same hardware BUT WITH A CAMERA ADDED and idiot Apple fans will then plunk down another $500 for the new version.

        It's a beta. This reduces the initial load until they can tune the servers.

        You know, the same way Google limited the early beta test of Google+... but I guess betas from Google = good, getas from Apple = bad...

      That plausible but I'd suspect a couple other reasons too. First, when you rollout something new you want to make sure it does not get a reputation for sucking. One way to do this is to roll it out only on the best machines. And also as you say a smaller foot print helps control things. Second, I'd bet it is full of debugging code and is not optimized. It is known already it chews batteries. If you put this on older phones with tired batteries it's going to get a bad reputation.

      So there's reasons besides the naked one of forcing upgrades.

      That's a rather generous interpretation of Apple's motivation. Another interpretation might be that they needed to differentiate their minor hardware upgrade to convince iPhone 4 owners that it was worth upgrading.

      • I highly doubt Apple is expecting 4 owners, still under contract, to pay a penalty to upgrade to 4S. There are plenty of people like me for whom the 4S is their first iPhone.

          Some probably would upgrade. After all, some people have unlimited money for all intents and purposes in this discussion. But mainly I think it is a product differentiator for new customers or the old customers that are upgrading from an older iPhone to one of the newer ones.

          I recently upgraded from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4. The reason I didn't go with the 4s is that it was more expensive and the faster CPU and Siri didn't really appeal to me.

          I don't believe the faster CPU and GPU are a big sell on their own to the general public. Apple needed some VISIBLE new feature to differentiate the 4s. They came up with Siri, which TBH currently appears a little dumb to me.

      No doubt I'll be wrong in some spectacular way but my guess is that it'll be a paid option for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. If that's correct it'll probably cost Apple's usual "token" amount of $10 or so.

      My brain may be addled, but I believe I was using Siri as a stand-alone app on my 3GS already, before it was bought up by Apple? As it's own app, it was not as good as the integrated thing it has become, but it was okay for searches. I also was using Apple's own voice recognition on

      Yes, I've heard Dan Benjamin complain on one of his podcasts [5by5.tv] that there's some disruption of Siri services when there's a large influx of users, such as when the US east coast wakes up. So this would seem to be at least part of the reasoning.

    • I doubt if Apple will roll it out to older iPhones. Siri is not just an application, it is a service, which Apple has chosen to charge for as part of the purchase price of the iPhone 4s. I suppose Apple could offer it as an extra-cost option for older devices, but I suspect that this would not win them any points with owners of those devices. So it makes more sense for Apple to treat it simply as a feature of the iPhone 4s. I suppose Apple might consider adding it to the iPad 2, which was released not long

      This was my thought exactly. Siri is still listed as a product in beta, and all the logic is cloud-based. Sales of the 4S exceeded expectations, and I don't think it's a coincidence that last week several users across the country were reporting frequent problems with Siri connecting to the network. There's really not a lot of work done on the client, so there's no reason that Siri would not be available on any device capable of running iOS5 when it goes GA.     Siri was, of course, available as an app for iPhones going back to the original 2G, correct? And on 4S launch day, Apple (having bought Siri from the original developer) disabled Siri for everyone who was already using it, in a naked attempt to force their loyal fanbase to upgrade, if I'm not mistaken? It's amazing to me how Apple fanboys can continue to stay so fanatically loyal after every punch in the beanbag from Cupertino.

      • I downloaded and tried Vlingo. First, Siri better suck a whole lot less for it to catch on. Second, Vlingo isn't ubiquitous inside the iPhone. You have to fire up the app and hope your request can be met by one of its seemingly very few plugins.

        I'm a jealous iPhone 4 owner and installed Vlingo about 30 seconds after I heard of it. I uninstalled it about 2 minutes later.

      There are other voice control apps that do pretty much what the original version of Siri did, so it's hardly a big loss. What Apple offers with the iPhone 4s is extensive integration of voice into the phone's function at a very basic level--which means that it will get a lot more use, and the server load (and Apple's costs for supporting it) will be substantially greater if they'd kept it an app like the original Siri.

    • It's almost as if they're just in this for the money. Apple paid for that company, who the hell are they to do what they want with it? They have some nerve!
      • You cloud the issue. No one, as you might have noticed, is arguing that Apple doesn't have the right to do as they have, as no one is calling for a DoJ inquiry, antitrust investigation, or anything of the sort. But when some customers have had a feature for several years, and then it's yanked away and ransomed back to them for the cost of a pricey phone upgrade, the customers have every reason to feel slighted. Behavior like that can damage customer goodwill built up over many years.

Apple liked this app and wants it to become a core feature of their products, differentiating one from another. They couldn't very well allow it to live on as a free option if they're relying on it as a feature, you see?         Prompt is a pretty good SSH client, available on the App Store. Unless of course you're talking about running an SSH server on your phone. To what practical end? So you can SMS someone through CLI?

        I don't see a need for an FTP client on my iPhone, but a quick google brings up http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ftp-on-the-go/id286479936?mt=8 [apple.com]. Are you actively using your iPhone as an FTP server? Is that a workaround for using it as file storage or what? If you need to FTP in to transfer files, why not host an FTP

  • i love the new 4s. it has mirroring capability which is great for me since now i can project everything i load on my iphone without worrying about if the app has video out capabilities. Connecting it to my aaxa p4 takes seconds.
  • Jailbreak for iPad2 is in the works? Ummm... Mine is already jailbroken. Has been for several months.
