No Porn for You, iPod 247

TheBrutalTruth writes "Wired has an article explaining why pornographers are staying away from the Video IPod. From the article: 'When it comes to the iPod, Fayling said there are few rewards and many risks. Fayling emphasized the pitfalls of combining a device designed for younger audiences with content they are prohibited from viewing. "There's already a public perception that we (in the industry) are preying on youth," he said. "Without safeguards you open yourself up to more scrutiny from government and parents' groups.'"

In February, a man was arrested in Schenectady, New York, for viewing an adult movie in his vehicle. Also this year, Tennessee outlawed the display of obscene movies from a car. The City Council in Flint, Michigan, passed a measure imposing a $500 fine upon drivers who play pornographic movies in their cars.

WTF? there is a rule specifically against watching PORN in a CAR?
Is this a rampant problem? Why would anyone need a rule against that?

(I presume this is not about watching movies while driving)

Staying away from the iPod? You got to be kidding me!

I know this is Slashdot, but if you bothered to RTFA, you'd see that povPod.com is specifically mentioned in the article as providing porn for the iPod. Sheesh.

As someone said: "America is a strange country, you cannot have a breast shown on TV there unless it has been cut off". (Sorry, it's a re-translation).

It was interesting to read this article after just last night hearing a short news blurb on my local CBS affiliate about the porn industry is "embracing" the new iPod with man on the street interviews with people who don't like the idea of having the "guy sitting next to them in class looking at porn," and overarching implications that parents should be alarmed and ready to take up arms to defend their kids' innocence.

I doubt I'd load my iPod up with pr0n just for the convenience of stopping for a quick pull in a public restroom

Yeah, I hear what you're saying: public places present a problem if you're mostly sane and flying solo. A better use of the iPod video could be for times when you're with someone in public and both of you are looking to look together. That could be a real turn on and could lead to healthy if somewhat exhibitionistic and/or mildly indiscreet sexy stuff. On the other hand, and you can see what might be putting the chill on the porn industry, imagine a perv who sits next to an outdoor yoga class and queues "Yoga Yolanda Flexes for Felix" for a quick trip to augmented reality. I won't even go to the nightmares of sex-anxious parents who worry that Billy might show Susie "something neat" on his iPod behind the gym.

I think portable video is inevitable, but I also think that there will be sensationalized stories of the uses and abuses of portable video, too. What I'm wondering is what happens when cameras, wireless, and portable display devices combine to produce a users' revolution in video journalism, not porn, but politics.

If I were a porn producer I'd add a soundtrack to a few explicit sex scenes and start selling them as adult music videos.

It is very interesting that you believe intercourse is universally preferred to masturbation. Don't get me wrong, it is a better quality experience (more bang for your buck - no pun intended), but there is a substantial investment in effort to get started and a much lower rate of return. When it comes down to it, sometimes (a lot of the time) I don't want to be bothered heating up the proverbial iron. Sometimes you just want to be by yourself and think about the things you want to think about and do whatever it is you please. I hate referencing studies that I can't actually point to and haven't actually read, but I have heard it said that the vast majority of men continue to masturbate well into their marriage. I find that to be extremely plausible. I don't know what the statistics are for women, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it somewhat less.
