  • It's also available via software update panel in the preferences application.

    Surprisingly, it does not require a reboot.
  • Interestingly, the compatibility [apple.com] page lists exactly zero scsi drives. Why do they wish to be like that. Im guessing they are being lay to the z here.

  • I really like Software Update. It just plain works. I'm installing the Disc recording Update as I write this, I can't wait to see if it will finally allow me to burn iso's I get from various places, not just Mac specific iso's. I can't seem to burn FreeBSD iso's using desktop software (DiskCopy), is there anything in Fink I can install into X that allows for full-featured burning on a SuperDrive? I haven't looked yet (yep, I'm a lazy bastard).
    • SU is great! it can install SO much without bogging down the system. if you have ever used WindowsUpdate, you will know what i mean. it basically monopolizes the *whole* system
    • i managed to burn a (bootable) PC iso of mandrake linux using disk copy. no problem. you may want to try with another iso.

    Neo Jukebox on OS X. Even a generic usb-ide driver would d0, if possible.

    • There is a driver for USB mass storage devices which is already part of the operating system. It is /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.k ext, labelled com.apple.iokit.IOUSBMassStorageClass. It should work with your Neo Jukebox the same as it should work with my Neo 25, but the USB chipset in the Neos is flawed. I was able to get it to work in Linux once upon a time by modifying the USB mass storage driver to ignore some of it's integrity checks... I wonder if the Apple driver could be similarly modified. Hm... IOUSBMassStorageClass oughta be part of the open source darwin... hm...

  • Now, instead of pulling a freeze then a dirty great kernel panic, iTunes recognizes my Lacie USB CD-RW (weirdly, after turning it on, then off then back on again :/ ).

    The cool thing is the update works transparently with Titanium, where as with OS 9 the two sets of drivers would often screw around with each other.

    These two points together with lots of other little things (uummmm, flurry... [versiontracker.com])make me steadily more comfortable with the whole X thang. peace.

  • I mean, who doesn't regularly check software update manually anyway?? but maybe I'm mental because I'm used to looking after loads of big servers and I check for security updates daily. what would be good would be a discussion of what has changed. I use Toast - will this update affect me?
    • Like I said in my previous post, and this could be totally unfounded :), but I *think* iTunes and Toast sort of 'share' driver resources, this recorder update meant my burner now works with both programs.

      Now, the problem is, if that isn't so and it screws something up I don't have a clue how to remove it :) Back in the 9 days it would be a simple hunt-the-extension game but that stuff has just got a wee bit harder :)
