Yellow Dog Linux 2.2 ISO Available 28

DarkClown writes "Just noticed the ISO for Yellow Dog Linux 2.2 went up for download on their main server; you may want to wait for it to hit a mirror, though." It was available for purchase a few weeks ago, and now you can download it for free, you moochers. You might also want to check out the installation guides, including an instructional video via Real Media.

  • I'm glad to see any variety of languages out there, so long as we can have a universal translator for communication between systems. Now if we could only move on to a greater variety of hardware architecture.

To run Gimp in XDarwin under OS X, or to install Yellow Dog and run it from there? (Can you run YD Linux from within a Virtual PC like memory space? That would actually be pretty cool.)
    • My experience with XDarwin has been fantastic. Apps under XDarwin seem so much faster and more responsive than they ever did under LinuxPPC, YDL or Debian on my 266mhz Powerbook. The Gimp runs great under XDarwin as well. My advice would be to install Fink and then use that to do all of the rest of your Unix apps. The fact that I have apt on my OS X system is just that much cooler. Stick with OS X and you won't be disappointed. This is advice coming from someone who faithfully used LinuxPPC for 3 years and has now switched wholeheartedly to OS X.

    • I prefer to run Gimp on OSX, mainly because I can use it alongside my OSX apps. My Linux box is a 604e 200MHz so Gimp is understandably slower for me under Linux.

You might be able to run Linux on VirtualPC but you cant run PPC Linux that way. Remember VirtualPC emulates a PC so its gonna be slow no matter what OS youre running on it.

Running Native linux alongside OSX would be alot of trouble, and it hardly seems worth the effort. Would be much more useful to simply port the programs you wanted from linux to OSX.
    • Virtual PC only emulates a x86 processor, so you can only load x86 OSes on it. So, you could run Linux (just not a PPC distro!), DOS, Windows, OS/2 whatever (though, BeOS doesn't work).

Personally I think running Gimp on XDarwin is the best solution. Use Fink, and do it rootless and that's even better.

Is there any way to upgrade from YDL 2.1 to 2.2? I'm running a rather customized install of 2.1, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of doing it again.

(Perhaps more importantly, is there any way to install X without KDE or Gnome in this version? I'm running it on a 7200/120, for crissake; fvwm or blackbox are more than enough, especially with a lousy 2 gigs of storage to work with.)

      Real Media? What's that?

Does seem odd that they wouldn't offer it in Quicktime -- it's not like the target audience can't view it. If you've got Linux installed and running, and thus no way to see Quicktime streams, you're a little beyond the introductory video. Ah, well.

As for the Flamebait mod, looks like they're still handing out free Drano chunks and telling the mods its crack.

Here's an idea for Yellow Dog:
Develop a linux compatibility layer for OS X. True, many command-line utilities already compile and run just fine on OS X, but many depend on libraries specific to linux, and won't compile.

Solution: develop a simple-to-install set of libraries which would enable use of most (if not all) linux programs on OS X.

That's ironic that they're using RealPlayer. I've used YellowDog for a year now and still can't get a stable linuxppc version of it to run.
