I voted for Assange, in spite of his personal flaws, because he has performed the important service of helping air government secrets that we need to know; and he has suffered considerably for it.
Yeah, he's far from perfect, but most of us imperfect people can live our lives in relative peace. He's paying a much larger price for his imperfections. I see it as a sacrifice he's made, willingly or not, in standing up to powerful interests.

...So you don't find that, among your club, DS9 is the runaway favourite of the various series? Because that's certainly the case among those I know.
I've encountered a few (mostly online) who rant bitterly that it was a terrible soap opera of a series, and that the only real Star Trek had Kirk and Spock, but I think most fans these days are more interested in what actually makes good stories and good television than holding onto a particular image of "what Star Trek should be" that's now nearly 50 years old. (If only because there are more people left alive who grew up with actual good television than those who grew up with what was available when the original Trek came out...)

I also found it odd that despite being such a critical part of space even before the wormhole was discovered, there was no one higher-ranked than Commander in-command. There should have been a flag officer in charge of the sector based at the station, and the station was woefully under-equipped when the show started, even as a newly acquired outpost. It couldn't even really defend itself, let alone serve as a defensive node for the region. After the wormhole's discovery it should have been loaded with scientists, first-contact specialists, diplomats from every Alpha-quadrant race with their own consulates or embassies, and a more significant military presence.
I get that it's hard to write when the station and crew generally don't go anywhere; that was a problem with Space: 1999 and even occasionally with Babylon 5, and absolutely doomed some other shows like Mercy Point, but other shows like Stargate and its spinoffs managed to get twenty years of seasons without a ship, with basically a wormhole as the plot device.

Except the locals who owned it weren't a member state for most of the series; they just contracted out station management to starfleet. What flag officer wants to be the space equivalent of a local franchise Securitas manager?

The less-stable the sector, the more important it is to bring in the decision-makers, especially when long-distance communication of that magnitude probably won't be in real-time and with the gamma quadrant angle will be even worse.

Good television? Today? I'll agree some of it is good but 90 percent is pure mental drivel. The wildly popular Kardashians make me want to vomit. If that was all that was on I'd have no TV. Watching grass grow or maybe watching paint dry is more interesting than most of what passes for entertainment today.

TV today is better than it was 5-10 years ago. The reality show craze has faded somewhat, and though the genre is clearly going to stick around, we still have some damn good shows on TV today—things like Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead, just to name a few.
Yeah, there's crap on TV. There's going to be crap in the visual programming lineup as long as there remains a visual programming lineup, because some people will pay to see crap.

Educated, cultured, humane, civilized: along with Marcus Aurelius, a living proof that near-absolute power does not always have to corrupt absolutely. Sadly, he was murdered by Christians to prove that their religion (which mandates peace, forgiveness, and non-violence) was better than his.

If he had been a secular ruler, rather than politically targeting Christians in an effort to to reverse the religious course of the empire, it might not have been such a sticking point. Christianity was not the only, nor the dominant, religion of the Persian empire. And all but one historian believed that he was killed in battle, not assassinated by a Christian (or Christians). That one historian could be right, but it doesn't justify your confident position. I suspect your grasp on history is colored by your own religious beliefs.

By his own accord, Julian never accepted Christianity, so it could be said that the term apostate doesn't apply. Julian's father was not initially Christian, but a convert. He was the half-brother of Constantine who also famously converted. There is therefore no evidence of Julian ever being Christian.
This is of course mostly relevant if you consider the term apostate a pejorative, which is very much a Christian stance. Therefore only Christians at the time and later Christians make a case of arguing the point. It reminds me a bit of the nazi "accusing" Chaplin of being a Jew.
